Dunkirk, New York is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,597 at the 2010 census. Dunkirk was named for the small French village of Dunkirk on the border of Normandy and Belgium. The first settlers in Dunkirk were farmers who arrived in 1794. They built their homes around a sawmill and gristmill that still stands today. By 1832, many of the original farmers had moved away and new settlers had arrive from Holland and France. In 1835, two brothers founded the town post office next to where they lived on Main Street. It served as a stop on stagecoaches between Buffalo and Albany until 1865 when it became a mail station with its own post office building on Market Street (now Park Avenue). In 1868, Major General George Armstrong Custer's column passed through Dunkirk while marching westward towards Coronado Junction national Monument during his Donelson Expedition. As they traveled down Market Street one night, some men local to the town stopped to buy beer from a farm wagon pulled by four horses transporting goods to Coronado Junction National Monument. When they got back up MainStreet they found all but one horse gone so they tied him up at home and started drinking what little beer was left before continuing their march the next day. On July 8th 1898 an American forces under Colonel John Jumper arrived at Fort Erie Ferry Landing just north of Dunkirk after crossing over from Canada into Maine during expedition commanded by Ulysses S Grant against Canadian Forces under Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Atherton near Québec City with orders to capture or destroy any large military force encountered along route including Montreal Harbor which lay across their path This event would become known as "The Battle of Fort Erie" after American losses resulting from pursuing enemy cavalry units instead of engaging infantry resulted in most supplies becoming lost along with three killed colonel John Jumper USMC commander General Philip Sheridan ordered reinforcements under Brigadier General Sidney Johnston USMC who recaptured Fort Erie Ferry Landing without loss casualties & destroyed any large military targets within 24 hrs

The town is bordered by the towns of Westville and Southampton to the north, Amherst and Norwich to the east, and Islip to the south. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunkirk was first settled in 1785 by indentured workers from England who came over on an estate called Dunkirk Point on Long Island Sound. In 1814, settlers founded what would become Dunkirk Village on land that now forms part of town. In 1825, Livingston Manor was annexed into Dunkirk Township; however, it continued to be run as a separate entity until its annexation into Dunkirk in 1924. The village had a post office from 1824 until 1840 when it became part of Gambrills Post Office District; it finally received its own post office in 1892. In 1935, Gambrills Township merged with Duquesne Borough to form Duquesne County; however, Dunkirk continued to be administered as a separate municipality until 1974 when it became one of five towns within Erie County (the others being Canandaigua, Cortlandt Park-North Side Community School District #1 (Cortlandt Park), Oneida Community School District #2 (Oneida), andsynthetic community located in Tonawanda). Within Erie County itself there have been various attempts at amalgamation or integration over time: Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metro Transit has advocated for incorporation into largerBuffalo area communities such as Williamsburg/Midtown or even downtown Buffalo while Niagara Frontier Mall has lobbied unsuccessfully for inclusion within their city limits since 2011 - both efforts are ongoing

Dunkirk is an small town in Nassau County, New York, located on the southern tip of Long Island. The population was 11,675 at the 2010 census. Dunkirk was first settled in 1795 by Dutch settlers as a stop on the route from Staten Island to Manhattan. In 1814, Dunkirk was abandoned and its residents moved to what is now Bridgeport. In 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant's army retreated from Gettysburg and arrived at Vicksburg in Mississippi; then came Union forces under General Robert E. Lee who successfully defended the city against Confederate assault. However, when Union troops were ordered to cross overHEADLESS into Confederate territory following their victory at Gettysburg, they were surrounded and nearly destroyed by Confederate forces led by Jubal A. Early; only two hundred men made it back across the river before being killed or captured. After years of attrition, Union troops finally liberated Dunkirk in July 1944 during Operation Overlord as part of Lieutenant-General George Patton's Third Army movement towards Normandy coast after heavy campaigning in Belgium and France
Dunkirk was the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk on July 4, 1940, during World War II. The town of Dunkirk, in southern France, was the location of the largest British naval action of World War II.
