The Dunkirk National Guard was organized on December 12, 1941 as a response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The New York National Guard was activated on April 30, 1942 and served in the Pacific War. The unit was mobilized again in 1945 and served during the war's final months. During World War II, the New York National Guard provided more than 21,000 soldiers and sailors who participated in over fifty-six campaigns and skirmishes across six continents. In recognition of their service, post-war New York City erected a series of public gardens called "National Guards Memorial Gardens." These gardens present an important view of military history from within the city limits. Today, the Dunkirk National Guard is one of only a few units active in New York City that still preserves its wartime culture and uniforms. This unit has also been awarded numerous medals and awards including two Presidential Unit Citations.

The Dunkirk National Guard was organized in 1792 and has served in the New York state Militia ever since. The unit was reactivated in 1917 as part of World War I and served until 1939, when it was disbanded due to combined military and paramilitary units being mobilized for the war. It re-emerged in 1946 as part of the newly created New York State Defense Forces, which remained active until 1970. In 1974, the Dunkirk National Guard became an all-volunteer force under the New York State Military Police Department.
Dunkirk is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 8,603 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dunkirk is on the southern bank of the Niagara River. The first settler in what would become Dunkirk was John Durant who arrived in 1776. He purchased land from the Mohawk Nation for $4 per acre and built a small cabin on it. The first post office was established here in 1833 and named after Captain George Duncan which stood near present-day Harbor Point Road and Main Street. In 1840, Durant's son James Durant donated land to build a sawmill on Factory Creek below present-day Main Street and Depot Road east of the riverbank; this mill became known as the "Dunkirk Mill". In 1851, James Durant sold his mill to Jacob Haggerty for $2 per acre. Haggerty built a gristmill on Factory Creek in 1855 and also started production of flour which he distributed through his mills to local farmers until 1865 when he closed his mills due to competition from larger mills located further downriver. He married Elizabeth Fenton (1820-1900) around 1850 and they had six children: Franklin Haggerty (1853-1926), Hannah Fenton (1857-1941), John Durant Haggerty (1860-1946), Anna Kendrick Haggerty (1864-1945), and Emma Orchard Haggerty (1868-1950). In 1865, Jacob Haggerty donated land northeast of Dunkirk Township line that became home to Village Park which remains today as one of its main features including tennis courts, playgrounds, baseball diamonds/fields with artificial water fronts etc.. The National Guard has been part of the United States government since 1775. The first national guard unit was formed in New York on April 14, 1776. The first Guardsman were ordered to march to Lexington and Concord to protect the patriots from British forces. In 1802, the Louisiana National Guard was organized and served as a model for all future National Guard units in the US. In 1947, the US military re-organized its commands into three branches: Army, Navy and Marines. One of these branches was called the Army Reserve (AR). The AR became activated on November 1, 1947 when President Harry Truman dissolved both the Marine Corps and Navy Reserve brigades which had been inactive for two years. The first AR unit was activated at Fort Worth Texas on November 2nd under command of Major General James Forrestal. On December 15th, 1947 President Harry S Truman signed legislation creating an AR regiment within each service branch with headquarters located at Fort Bliss Texas . This new regulation allowed for easier mobilization of militia units during times of war or emergency. On July 4th 1951 nearly 6500 reservists from 21 states marched through Washington DC in support of Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to remove North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. More than 10 000 citizens turned out to watch the parade which included military bands and floats made up largely of civilian volunteers from across America

Dunkirk was a small town in upstate New York, located on the southern bank of the Hudson River. Its residents were primarily farmers and fishermen who had to come to work in nearby New York City during World War II. The town was also home to Dunkirk Air Base, an airfield used by the United States Army for military operations in Europe during the war. The town first came into existence as a post office on July 9, 1864, under the name of Dunkirk Prairie. It changed its name to Dunkirk in 1896 when it became part of the newly created Town of Hempstead. The post office closed on October 15, 1907. Dunkirk was named after General John J. Pershing's Raid against German forces at Dunkirk in May 1940 which saved over 1,000 Allied troops from certain destruction or capture. During World War II, Dunkirk served as an airfield for American Forces stationed in Europe; it operated from July 1942 until November 1945. The base is now known as Whitestone Air National Guard Base and is home to several USAF units including squadron 343 Wing and unit 592d Fighter Wing (F-16Cs). In 1951, construction began on what would become one of New York's most famous landmarks: The Statue of Liberty National Monument; it was completed two years later and became one of America's most popular tourist attractions. In 1984, following a referendum vote by citizens, Dunkirk joined the city of Manhattan as part of Combined Statistical Area #2 (New York City + Staten Island).
