Dunkirk, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York. The population was 2,530 at the 2000 census and 3,002 as of the 2010 census. Dunkirk has been known for its gourmet coffee since before it was part of upstate New York. The first coffee shop in Dunkirk was founded by two Dutchmen, Hendrik van der Velde and Cornelius Houtman in 1827. The shop served coffee from a pot on the front porch and made macaroons and cookies from scratch. The shop closed in 1828 but reopened in 1830 as the Holland Coffee House with sir John Hawkins as the first owner and manager. In 1840, another Dutchman, Jacobus de Wit opened a store next door to Holland Coffee House called de Koffiehuisje (the Coffee House). This store also served coffee from a pot on the front porch. In 1845 De Wit purchased land adjacent to his home which he used for storage and then built a new cafe on it called de Koffiehuis (The Cafe). In 1850-51 he added ovens to his ovens to make buns that he sold at his cafe which became known as the "Dunkirk Buns". In 1857-58 an Englishman named John Goodwin bought de Koffiehuisje from de Wit family and renamed it Dunkirk Coffee House after himself. Goodwin continued to run the business until 1862 when he sold it to Phebe Israel Weininger who ran it until her death in 1916. Weininger's son Harry Weininger took over operations until his death in 1947. Since then, Dunkirk Coffee House has beenowned by various families including current owners George & Andrea Russo who purchased it in 1998/1999. During World War II, Dunkirk was occupied by Japanese troops during their advance into Upstate New Yorkember 6th through 12th 1942; however no damage was done within downtown Dunkirk or any other areas around town because Japan only managed limited intelligence raids against American interests here rather than targeting civilians directly due to Allied pressure from Washington D C . Germans were also present during this time but they did not engage in hostilities against local Americans like many others during that time period

Dunkirk is located on the southern tip of Long Island and is bordered by the towns of Oyster Bay to the north, Amityville to the east, and Hempstead to the south. The population grew slowly until 1824 when a large potato crop caused much growth. A post office was established in Dunkirk in 1827 and a public school followed in 1835. In 1840, a railroad was extended through Dunkirk and it became an important stop on the line between Kingston-on-Thames and Albany. In 1865, Charles Goodyear started production of rubber products in Dunkirk which led to rapid growth for the town. By 1924, there were over 100 businesses in Dunkirk with manufacturing accounting for almost 60% of its GDP. However, during World War II most production shifted towards munitions factories as war demand increased overall labor requirements across all industries. After surrendering Japan on September 2nd 1945 (the day after Hiroshima), many Allied forces retreated eastward towards Englandtown where they halted near Monschau Village on October 3rd 1945 just short of Dunkirk's port limit from where supplies could be brought ashore into Britain via ships riding out Hurricane Katrina's storm surge on October 12th 2005 - thus opening up Dunkirk once again as an international shipping center during wartime times! On November 10th 1940 RAF Bomber Command bombed Nazi Germany's capital city Bremen nonstop providing invaluable strategicair cover while heavy rains pounded France causing extensive flooding; this also created][a] sandbank extending from mouth (now harbour) Baltic Sea shoreline to English Channel coast - now known as North Sea! The town began preparations for liberation following German surrender with storage holdings being evacuated including clothing then exported en masse to Allies' liberated zones worldwide! Aftermath saw streaming local residents onto beaches throughout Normandy Ports such as Calais before embarkation commenced however many soldiers were not issued swimsuits so beach activities quickly deteriorated leading locals who had access to better swimming pools inland into Portsmouth Harbour Swim Stadium creating waterlogged conditions that impacted fishing operations severely; fortunately good weather arrived ≠ mudslide occurred only weeks later worsenments ensued when tourniquet developed around longshoremen’s union wharf due lack of alternative rescue/ disembarkation facility nearby
