Dobbs Ferry, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Ontario and Erie Counties. The population was 1,539 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. Coffee was first grown in Dobbs Ferry in 1853 by Nicholas Fenton. In 1865, Professor Augustus Graham started a coffee plantation near Dobbs Ferry. The first commercially roasted coffee beans were delivered to Buffalo by rail from Graham's plant in 1865. In 1903, Colonel Edward Mann began producing coffee for the American military at his farm about two miles east of Dobbs Ferry on Takerehaugh Road. Mann's beans became known as "Dobbs Ferry Coffee". After World War II, production increased rapidly due to postwar demand for food products related to troops stationed in Japan and Korea. At the same time, prices for Guatemalan and Brazilian coffee rose sharply due to lottery tariffs placed on these countries' exports to America. This caused many small farmers throughout America to switch from growing subsistence crops such as corn or peas to commercial production of higher quality beans under blue ribbon brands like Maxwell House and Starbucks

Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Montgomery County, New York, United States. The population was 1,392 at the 2010 census. It is the administrative center of the Town of Dobbs Ferry. The first people to settle in Dobbs Ferry were Ichabod and Nabby French, who arrived in 1795. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1810, John Thacher settled here and became one of the earliest settlers in this area. A post office was established here in 1811 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1892. In 1825, William Halsey built a small brick house on what is now Academy Road which he called "Halsey's House". This house served as the local courthouse from 1825 to 1830 and again from 1840 to 1850. In 1830, Isaac Browning erected a large frame building on what is now School Road which he called "Browning's House". This building served as the local courthouse from 1830 to 1860 and again from 1870 to 1880. In 1896, Dobbs Ferry had a population of 2,000 people when it was made an incorporated village by act of Congress under Section 527 of the New York State Constitution (the Towns Act). The Village Committee consisted of two members: one chosen by vote from each household within the village; and one member selected by ballot from residents who resided outside of the village limits but voted within their own households for that purpose. The first election for Village Committee took place on November 3rd 1895 with Samuel Silliman being elected President pro tem; Nellie Fenton Vice President pro tem; Eliza Davenport Treasurer; Eunice Pinchbeck Hospital Inspector; Alice Juhl Physician Assistant; Lewis Cuthbert Administrator for Schools; Frank Wills Aldermanic 1st District Court Clerk & sealer-in-chief ; Everett Sprague Superintendent of Public Works & Health Department ; Alice Juhl Physician Assistant also practiced law within her own home until she moved out after her husband’s death in 1902 She also continued practicing law until her retirement in 1969 ! In 1916, Dobbs Ferry's last smallpox pandemic killed over 60% of its residents; however, as late as 2001 local officials estimated that only 1-2% of all villagers still carry the disease.
