Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, north of Scranton. The US military deployment history begins with the American Revolution and its aftermath. Dobbs Ferry was one of the original towns in the Province of Pennsylvania, which was then divided into Maryland and Delaware. In 1777, General George Washington's forces seeking to protect Philadelphia were forced to retreat after they met stiff resistance from British troops at Battle of Gwatkin's Mill; this event is considered to be one of the bloodiest episodes in American history. The area now comprising Dobbs Ferry was part of what is now Monroe Township in Erie County, Pennsylvania. On July 4, 1794 General James Abercrombie marched his brigade (1st Battalion) under command of Colonel John Armstrong through Dobbs Ferry on their way to battle against Patriot forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Montgomery at Monmouth Court House; Abercrombie's brigade arrived too late for any significant action that day. However, three days later he again led an army through Dobbs Ferry on their way to Princeton Heights where they engaged and defeated Montgomery's force; this victory signals beginning a long-standing military relationship between these two towns. Dobbs Ferry, New York is a small town located in Ulster County, New York. The population was 7,577 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area and is bordered by the towns of Vestal and Oneida on the north, Lake George on the east, and Schenectady on the south. The town was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Dobbs as a trading post between Utica and Albany. The first permanent settler arrived in 1796, when Andrew White built a cabin near what is now Main Street. In 1802, John Butland purchased land here from Nicholas Dobbs and began to build a house that would become his home. By 1806, Butland had completed two houses and named them "Dobbs Ferry". In 1811 he married Maria Smith; they had three children: John Burt (b. 1812), Lucy Ann (b. 1814), and Nicholas Jr.(b. 1816). In 1830, Porcellian Furniture Manufacturing Company moved its operations to Dobbs Ferry from Troy; it continued operation there until 1944. In 1865, local farmer James Fenton opened an estate nursery called Fenton's Garden that became one of America's leading producers of eggnog; it continues to produce eggs today. In 1930s Dobbs Ferry was known for its annual pumpkin festival which attracted many visitors from all over Upstate New York including Franklin D Roosevelt who was visiting Albany at that time In 1957–58 electrification of Route 5 made travel into town much easier so there were more businesses opening up including restaurants etcetera which caused growth in popularity among locals as well as tourists

Dobbs Ferry was one of the most important settlements in upstate New York during the late 18th century. It was located on the south bank of the Hudson River, about twenty miles (32 km) east of Albany. Dobbs Ferry was founded by Nicholas Dobbs and his wife Nancy in 1788, after they arrived from England. The settlers developed a small trading post and began to build a log cabin settlement. In 1792, they moved their community to what is now known as the Dobbs Ferry Historic District. The town's first school was built in 1795, and it became an important stop on Native American trade routes. In 1807, Dobbs Ferry voted to secede from New York state and become a separate town under the leadership of David Levy. At its peak, Dobbs Ferry had a population of about 400 people. By 1800, however, it had shrunk to just thirty-five people. In 1825, there were only thirteen residents left in Dobbs Ferry; by 1830, there were only six living occupants remaining. By 1840, though, only two people remained living in Dobbs Ferry—one of whom was Nicholas Dobbs' grandson Johnathan Dubois Sr., who later served as governor of New York State from 1898 to 1902
