Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 3,099 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Dobbs Ferry was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and was named after Hendrick de Bohun, an early settler. The first post office in Dobbs Ferry was established in 1792. In 1821, it became a village and in 1825, it became a town. In 1861, the Erie Canal was completed through the town and its growth continued to be accelerated due to this development. By 1870, Dobbs Ferry had become one of the largest towns on the canal system with a population of over 10,000 people. After prohibition began in America in 1920s, industries such as brewing and lumber were moved out of Dobbs Ferry and other nearby towns during what is known as "the Great Depression". However, agriculture still played a large role in community life until after World War II when manufacturing again became dominant. Today many local businesses continue to operate including some that are dedicated to coffee production such as Starbucks Coffee Company (founded 1976).

The first settler in Dobbs Ferry was John Snyder, who arrived in 1785. The first post office was established in 1825 and named after General James Wilkinson (1753-1827), who fought with Gen. George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. In 1836, the village became a town when it joined Erie County. Dobbs Ferry has a rich history that dates back to early settlers and their families. Some of the earliest land transactions occurred when Allan Paine bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land from Nicholas Morse for $5 per acre ($100 total). One of Dobbs Ferry's first businesses was an apothecary shop which opened on Main Street in 1824 by Drs. Moses Fenton and Levi Dearborn under the name of "Dearborn & Dearborn". In 1830, Ebenezer Dodge donated 4 rods (of 21/2 feet = 6 m) lot to be used as a public square between First and Second Streets; this square still exists today and is known as Dodge Park.. After becoming a full town, Dobbs Ferry's industries include agriculture (especially chicken farming), manufacturing (particularly glassmaking), retail trade (including two general stores, one bakery and one candy store), transportation services including bus service to Amherstville and Buffalo Niagara Airport, as well as tourism with several bed and breakfast properties located within walking distance of the community center or its beach access points.. The commercial fishing industry continues to be an important part of local economy with operating fleets based out of Two Bridges Marina located just south of town limits on Lake Ontario; these fleets provide fresh produce for local grocery stores throughout Western New York.. In recent years there have been efforts made by some residents to improve infrastructure such as improving roads/bridges/etc., but these have generally not received much attention outside of townspeople themselves due largely to concerns about how such projects would impact existing socioeconomic conditions within Dobbs Ferry itself – which are generally considered very good by most observers..

Dobbs Ferry was a small hamlet located in the town of Westchester County, New York, United States. It is now a ghost town and incorporated as a village on October 17, 1868. The name is derived from Nicholas Dobbs who settled there in 1786. At the time of its incorporation, Dobbs Ferry had a population of only 100 people. The first permanent settler in Dobbs Ferry was Nicholas Dobbs who arrived in 1786 and built a log cabin on the current site of the old post office. He married Susannah Fields and moved to what is now the south side of Dobbs Ferry. In 1827, Colonel John French erected an adobe courthouse on Main Street which served as the seat for justice for both Westchester County and Nassau County until it burned down in 1829. In 1828, General James Wilkinson purchased land at present-day milepost 7 on Route 5 opposite Stonington; hebuilt an experimental farm known as "Wilkinson's Station." In 1830, he sold this land to Ebenezer Whitehead who founded Whitehead's Mills; it continued under his ownership until 1903 when it became part of the Town of Oneida. A post office called "Dobbs Ferry" was established at this location on November 12, 1834 by order of Governor Philip Schuyler; it remained open until 1865 when it was discontinued because no Mail carrier could be found to service it. The first recorded resident was Mrs. Ann Boicey who lived at 231 Broadway near what is now Mechanic School Road (near today's intersection with East Main Street). Mrs. Boicey may have been assisted by her sister-in-law Martha Applegate who resided across from her at 6 Greenbush Avenue at that time also serving as Postmistress for both towns during that early period (1834-1865). After Mr .Boicey's death in 1840 she bequeathed all her property including her home and garden to Hobart Colburney Jr., grandson of American Revolutionary War veteran Hobart Colburney Sr.. Mrs Applegate died several years later leaving behind two young children - one daughter Anna (baptized Elizabeth) Colburney and another son George Washington Colburney Jr.. George Washington inherited his grandmother’s home & garden after she passed away in 1861 but did not live there long having only occupancy from 1863-1865 while his father lived there full time since THEN!
