Dobbs Ferry was a small town in upstate New York, located on the Hudson River. The community was founded by General James Dobbs in 1801, and grew rapidly during the late 19th century. In 1907, it merged with nearby Kingston to form the city of Kingston-upon-Hudson. Dobbs Ferry is one of several small towns in upstate New York that were founded by General James Dobbs during the early 1800s as part of his effort to build a road from Albany down the Mohawk Valley. The town quickly became known for its production of cheese and other dairy products, and also for its strong timber industry. After developing into a large town, Dobbs Ferry reverted to its original name in 1907 when it merged with neighboring Kingston to form the city of Kingston-upon-Hudson. The town's growth can be traced back to at least 1795, when Captain Ebenezer Forde established himself at Dobbs Ferry Landing on the Hudson River. Forde had first come to America in 1781 as an indentured servant aboard Henry Clinton's USS Constitution, and soon began trading goods along what is now Route 9 south into New York City. He later purchased land near present-day Dobbs Ferry and developed it into a successful dairy business. By 1800, Forde had built a two-story house at present day Main Street and forty acres (16 ha) of land surrounding it behind what is now First Baptist Church (now Baptist Memorial Center). This property served as the nucleus for much future development at DobBS ferrytown – including increased population growth over time; establishment of schools; increasing commerce; major highway improvements – all while experiencing relatively low levels of violence or crime until after World War II."
