Dobbs Ferry is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Ulster and Greene counties. It is bordered by the towns of Monroe to the east and Liverpool to the west. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The first gun that Dobbs Ferry residents may remember comes from 1827. That year, Captain Daniel Boone purchased a rifle from an Indian trader in what is now Erie County. In 1828, John A. Toole brought a shotgun to town after finding it abandoned on Staten Island. George Rogers donated four pistols to the town as part of his dowry for his wife Sarah Logan (she would later be married to Genesee County Sheriff Jacob Riis). Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Albany–Jeffersonville, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded by Colonel Nathaniel Dobbs and his family in 1792. He surveyed the area that would become Dobbs Ferry and built a ferryboat on the Susquehanna River to carry goods between eastern Scotland and western New York City. In 1834, Colonel Dobbs sold his interest in the ferry company to Peter Gorman and Samuel Glickman. The two men donated land for a local high school which opened in 1868. In 1924, George Washington High School opened as well; it is now known as Stuyvesant Hills-George Washington High School. Dobbs Ferry has been represented by three U.S. Senators: Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1921-27), John F Kennedy (1963-1969), and Joseph Rangel (1981-1987). Dobbs Ferry was a small town in the Adirondacks of New York State until 1812. It had a post office from 1795 to 1868, and a railroad station from 1856 to 1870. The town was located at the mouth of the Dobbs Ferry Creek on the Hudson River. The first permanent European settlers in Dobbs Ferry were French colonists who arrived in 1624. They were followed by English colonists in 1686. The Dutch also colonized Dobbs Ferry in 1688-89, but they abandoned it soon after. In 1795, the United States government granted land to John Jacob Astor for his commerce with Russia. In 1796, George Washington awarded another tract of land to Astor, this time for his military service against France during the French and Indian War. In 1814, Congress passed an act granting two tracts of land along the river to Douglass County as part of its effort to improve navigation on the Hudson River system. The area now called Dobbs Ferry was included within Douglass County until it was renamed Hunterdon County in 1911. The first train journey through Dobbs Ferry occurred on October 26, 1856 when the Allegheny Valley Railroad reached there from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre via Uniontown Junction and Monmouth Junction. The line continued northward past present day Sayreville and into what is now Westchester County before terminating at Yonkers Terminal on December 1st of that year.
Dobbs Ferry was first settled in 1764 by John Dobbs. The current community of Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1871, and it became a village in 1903. In 1951, the town of Dobbs Ferry merged with the neighboring communities of West Nyack and East Nyack to form the new town of Suffern.
