Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,987 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dobbs Ferry is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario and is crossed by the village of Southport. The first people to settle in Dobbs Ferry were the Carnegies who came from Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1814 and arrived with their families aboard the " Albany ". They built a cabin onshore on what is now known as Point Pleasant Road and called it "Carnegie's Landing". In 1825, John A. Dobbs purchased land from Peter Simons for $1,000 in what is now North Park Plaza. He began to build a log cabin which would become his home until his death in 1897. His wife Mary (née Fitzpatrick) continued to live there until her death in 1928. The family name has been passed down through generations and still exists today as Dobbs Ferry Real Estate Management Company LLC (DFEMC). John A. Dobbs was an entrepreneur with expertise in agriculture and transportation who played a significant role in developing this small community into one of its own over time . He founded the John A. Dobbs Ferry Railroad Company (JAFR) which served as both a transportation corridor for farmers goods and passengers to destinations such as Buffalo and Niagara Falls . The JAFR also constructed several bridges including the old ferry terminal that stands today on Point Pleasant Road just south of Interstate 77

Dobbs Ferry was a small hamlet in Sullivan County, New York, United States. It is located on the south bank of the Hudson River and was first settled by Europeans in 1789. The name Dobbs Ferry came from John Dobbs, a Revolutionary War soldier who built a cabin there. In 1825, the town of Dobbs Ferry was chartered and it became an incorporated village in 1837. The population of Dobbs Ferry peaked at 237 in 1920 and declined to just over 100 by 1930. However, due to various factors including Prohibition and the Great Depression, the population fell again until it reached its low point of 73 in 1940. In recent years, however, Dobbs Ferry has experienced some revival with many residents moving into the area for new businesses or housing developments.
Dobbs Ferry was founded by George Dobbs in 1807 as a ferry between Newtown and the village of Dobbs Ferry. The first boat crossed the river at this location. In 1814, the United States Congress approved a bill providing for an armory and fort on the site of present-day Dobbs Ferry. The fort was built in 1815, and it served as a base of operations for American forces during the War of1812. The fort was destroyed by British forces in 1817, but the armory continued to function until its closure in 1865.
