Dobbs Ferry, New York is home to the United States Army Garrison in Fort Wadsworth. The garrison has been in operation since 1798. The first U.S. Army troops arrived in Dobbs Ferry on December 14, 1798, during the Northwest Indian War. From then until 1802 the garrison was part of the Second Corps of Infantry under General James Wilkinson and Commandant Hugh Fraser. In 1802 General Andrew Jackson moved the army from Erie to Dobbs Ferry and renamed it Third Corps of Infantry. In 1814-1815 Third Corps was brigaded with First Infantry Battalion under Colonel John Armstrong and fought at Battle of Monmouth as part of Brigade Hargrave’s division commanded by Major-General Isaac Brockenbrough. In 1819 Fourth Corps brigade was transferred to Second Division, Army of Northern Virginia under General Winfield Scott and participated in Battle of Bridgeport which resulted in a loss for both sides but also demonstrated American military prowess against British regulars who had previously played an important role in that battle during the Napoleonic Wars era when cavalry were an essential component of armies

Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1776 by Captain John Dobbs and his wife, Martha. The small community grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War, with many soldiers and their families coming to reside here. The town continued to grow after the war, and in 1814 it became a village. In 1827, Dobbs Ferry was incorporated as a town. It remained a townships until 1870, when it became an unincorporated hamlet within the Town of Rome. In 1898, Dobbs Ferry was annexed by the City of Rome. It has since become part of the larger Rome area. Dobbs Ferry is located on New York State Route 9A about six miles north of Rome. The community has a population of around 350 people as of 2010. There are several businesses in Dobbs Ferry, including a grocery store and two banks. The local library provides access to several books and periodicals dating back to the early 1800s.
