Depew is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Depew occurred on a site near the present day intersection of Elm and Locust Streets on July 10, 1785 by John Depew and his wife Mary Ann Strouds. The name was derived from Depechew Creek which ran through the village. The first settler to purchase land in what would become Depew was Nicholas Cooley on December 11, 1812. Other early pioneers included Daniel Freeman and David Kline. In 1827, James McKay purchased a tract of land comprising present-day DepEW from Nicholas Cooley for $5 per acre payable in cash and four years later he donated an additional three acres to the village for use as a public square. Depew had its own school district until it merged with Niagara Falls School District in 1915. In that year, also, the first sectional meeting ever held in this area were held at the home of Phebe Whitney Drummond who presided over what became known as "The First Presbyterian Church" (now First Baptist). This church building still stands today across Elm Street from Depot Square and is used asdepartment store headquarters today! In 1892 Mrs. Clarence Fenton erected a small frame house on SouthPark Avenue which served as depository for post office supplies until 1916 when mail service began from Buffalo-Niagara Falls station via private railroad line operated by Erie Railroad Company; however this service stopped operations due to lack of funds following World War I . In 1924 Representative Julius Caesar Kuhn moved his family into depews old log cabin situated off First Street southeast of Depot Square and they resided there until their death in 1978 leaving behind a lasting legacy! Today their home remains vacant but serves as museum property open to public view during regular business hours

Depew is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. The village of Depew was merged into the town on January 1, 2007. The first Europeans to visit Depew were French traders who landed there in 1724. In 1802, John Sylvester and his brother-in-law Danforth erected a sawmill on the east side of the Susquehanna River adjacent to what is nowdepewtownsite. On July 16, 1812–17 by order of President James Ketchum deputed George Armstrong to purchase from Paddy Ryan six hundred acres (2 km²) along both banks of the river for $1 per acre (3 ha). This Purchase formed part of Armstrong's Donation Land Scheme which provided land grants to American citizens in lieu of military service during the Mexican–American War. On October 14th 1830 Buffalo Bill and his men made their way downriver from Canada through this area when they camped near present day Depew on what is now Whatcom Path near present day Canandaigua Lake. They later moved ontopresentday Bellefontaine Road where they cached their horses and equipment before continuing downriver In 1836, John Cattahill built a grist mill on Beaver Creek and it became an important part of local commerce. A post office was established at Depew in 1856 although mail delivery continued until 1861 due to wagon travel time between Buffalo and Philadelphia which then took 2 weeks via Canandaigua Lake In 1888 William McKinley paid $5 for 100 acres (40 ha) north ofDepewtownsite property that would become Elmira College in honor of Andrew Carnegie who had given money towards its construction In 1897 Spelman College opened nearby with a large gift from Mrs Martha Spelman In 1907 Niagara Falls Bridge opened connecting Niagara Falls with Buffalo giving access not only tothe falls but alsoBuffalo Bayou beyond
On October 16, 1775, Depew was incorporated as a town in the western part of New York State by the New York Legislature. The first town meeting was held on November 3. The first settler in Depew was John Battan, who arrived in 1776. He erected a small log cabin on the east side of the river. Depew's population swelled when Captain Jameson and his detachment of Rangers passed through the town on their way to survey and purchase land for a future state farm at what is now Buffalo, New York. Many settlers from eastern Pennsylvania also came to Depew during this time. A schoolhouse and Baptist church were built soon after, but it closed due to financial problems in 1805. In 1812, another school building was erected and named after Reverend Jonathan Delany; it served until 1865. In 1814, an gristmill was built downstream from where the present water tower stands on the west bank of the River Susquehanna near modern-day Bethlehem Township. It quickly became one of Depew's most important commercial enterprises; until 1851 it produced flour, oil and other products for local merchants and customers aroundtown while also grain storage for local farmers. During its early years,Depew had two newspapers: The Republican (founded in 1792) and The Herald (1806). Both ceased publication within a few years because of competition from more influential papers established in Erie County or Buffalo area.
