The town was founded by Samuel Depew in 1808 as a stop on the Erie Canal. In 1825, Depew became the capital of Onondaga County and remained so until 1874 when it merged with Syracuse to form one large city. Today, Depew remains a small town with a rich history that can be found in its local stores and restaurants, as well as its two main tourist attractions: the Catoctin Hill Museum (founded in 1889) and Oneonta's restored downtown square/cathedral (founded in 1938). The history of Depew goes back to 1808, when Samuel Depew settled near what is nowdepew, NY after his journey from Holland via Delaware Bay and the Sound of Niagara arrived at Buffalo on July 6th that year. The present day village was founded on December 12th, 1825 by depews father-in-law Elias Peltz who named it for him son-in-law Jacob de Peltz who had married his daughter Martha depews widow Anna De Witt. In 1840, when Onondaga County was created out of parts of Cayuga and Oswego Counties,depew became an incorporated Village within Onondaga County but remained separate from Syracuse until 1850 when they both joined together to form one larger community under new name - "Onondaga". The first store opened in this new community which also housed their county courthouse along with several other buildings including schoolhouses and churches which are still extant today inside depews oldownsquare/cathedral precinct. Oneonta's restored downtown square/cathedral complexopened its doors to the public on September 10th 1948 just before Oneonta celebrated its centennial anniversary & sincethen has been home to many events such as weddings receptions balls & dinner theatre performances among others!

Depew, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Depew was John Depew and his family in 1793. The village of Depew was organized on February 14, 1824 by order of the State Legislature from parts of Canandaigua and Niagara Falls. A post office called Depew was established in 1825, and remained open until 1907. During the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), General George Washington's army passed through this area on their way to Canada; on one occasion they were joined by a detachment of militia under Colonel Daniel Wells at the mouth of the Onondaga River. In 1813, when Niagara County became Ontario County, Depew became part of that new county; it ceased to be an independent village in 1898 when it merged with Canandaigua into that larger city. In 1840, as part of a wave of immigration to what was then America's "New World", John Duryea arrived at depewsville Landing along Withlacoochee Creek near present day Depew and founded what would become Duryea Shipbuilding & Drydock Company located on Main Street today. That same year saw another wave arrive - Irish Catholics fleeing religious violence in Ireland - with many settling down arounddepewsville Landing after being smuggled across the ocean aboard ships arriving from Liverpool via Waterford Bay. By 1850 there were over 100 families living here including some who had brought livestock with them from Ireland such as cows and pigs which were fenced off inside courtyards surrounded by gardens/fields now known as depewsville Parkette! Many people came during this time for two reasons: to find work opportunities once America opened up following her victory over Great Britain in the Revolutionary War while also looking for ways to escape political oppression back home; many poor immigrants found themselves trapped between England's strict economy while they waited for their money orders or other forms of relief / assistance to arrive before they could leave again!
