The boost to business came from materials shipped by rail from nearby Buffalo and Detroit under wartime contracts that raised prices by 50%. Cortland, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Cortland is best known for its Agricultural History Museum and for its annual Cortland apples. The town started as a small settlement on the east edge of present-day Cortlandville on the Erie Canal in 1795. It grew rapidly because of its proximity to Lake George and its fertile land. In 1853, the village of Cortlandville merged with the Town of Albion to form a new borough. The Borough was disbanded in 1898 when it merged with Albany City. In 1902, the United States Congress passed an act granting township status to what is now Cortland County and making it one of seventeen townships statewide that year. On April 15, 1912, under pressure from residents who wanted more control over their taxes and less suburban development around them, the Township Legislature passed an act creating the Agricultural History Museum which remains today one of the largest agricultural museums in North America. In 1969, during Mayor Nelson Rockefeller's term as New York Governor (1966-1969), he declared cortLAND "the greatest apple orchard in America" due to his investment in developing infrastructure for growing apples there over many years beginning in 1966 - this included constructing a large orchard/production complex near downtown that still exists today - and also contributed generously towards local research into apple science through funding programs like Apple Grants awarded by State University at Purchase). In recent years other attractions have sprung up around Cortland such as a golf course built south of downtown by developer Jerry Zeldin; new restaurants and cultural venues like The Players' Project; and expansions into neighboring towns such as Angola where developers are building an indoor arena named after former mayor Adolphus Fenton Sallee which opened in October 2016
