Cortland, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 10,609 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in Erie County and one of the smaller towns in New York State. The first Europeans to visit Cortland were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. The name may be derived from the hilly area around it where oak trees grew abundantly. In 1795, when Cortland became part of Albany County, its land became too low lying for farming and development began only after a railroad was built through the village in 1851-52. In 1875, an act of Congress created Cortland Township and laid out its boundaries. That same year saw the opening of townhall which served as both a public meeting place and municipal court until 1886 when it was replaced by courthouse square. In 1908, two new communities were erected within the limits of Cortland: Northfield (named for pastor Cornelius Northfield) and Southfield (named for Revs Fenton and Willard). Townspeople voted on November 5th 1912 to merge with neighboring village Greenville to form one new municipality which they did on December 3rd 1913 under special law providing that all township vote on any merger proposal must be approved by a majority vote; this proposal failed 2-1. A referendum held two years later resulted in reelection of Mayor George Pappas as mayor despite opposition from many residents who felt that their rights had been taken away by amalgamation with Greenville; this referendum also passed with 58% support compared to 42% against. After more than 30 years of unbroken growth without major mergers or expansions within its borders, on February 1st 2016 Cortland voters elected Mayor Timothy Juhl as their first ever female mayor after he won 54% majority over his nearest competitor; this effectively ended any possibility for expansion into neighboring villages or boroughs since such requests would have required approval from multiple levels of government even though there are no formal boundaries between these areas constitutionally speaking

Cortland, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Cayuga and Tioga Counties. The first settlers in Cortland were two brothers named John and Peter Hecker who came to the area from Holland in 1654. They erected a log cabin on the north side of the village square in 1712. In 1813, when Sullivan County was created from part of Albany County, Cortland became one of its six towns. In 1827 it had a population of 2,554 and was granted an academy for boys by Representative Moses Young. The town's first store opened in 1829 and its first post office was established in 1830. In 1860, Cortland became part of the new Empire State University system when it was founded as an agricultural college by Senator George Averill Harriman with support from Buffalo banker James Geddes. In 1902-03 Cortland joined Allegany College (now Binghamton University) as a satellite campus of Empire State University until that institution merged with SUNY Polytechnic Institute in 1966 to form today's CuomoUniversity System. During World War II local industries produced military supplies such as munitions and aircraft parts; however little impact upon Cortland can be found due to this time period's scarce economic resources and relatively small population size
The town of Cortland, New York was first settled in 1798. It was named for General James Clinton. The town was incorporated in 1825 and became a city in 1851.
