The Cortland National Guard was organized on October 1, 1821 and have served the community of Cortland since then. The unit has a rich history that can be traced back to when the first militia unit was organized in the town. The first units were made up of men from the public schools and local militia companies. In 1825, a company of artillery was raised in response to the Burning of Troy. This event caused concern as it demonstrated how easily Militia could become used for law enforcement purposes by American citizens. In 1830, a regiment was organized and named after King George IV of Great Britain which served until 1840 when it became known as the 3rd Regiment New York Volunteers (Cortland County). During this time period, volunteer regiments were also raised in other towns in upstate New York such as Auburn, Ionia, Dover, Amherst and even Utica! On July 25th 1847, Governor John A. Sullivan signed into law an act entitled "An Act for raising a Volunteer Militia for Defense of State Affairs" which created the Cortland County National Guard. This act gave authority to form militias anywhere within New York state with no limits on membership or budget. The first members were sworn into service on September 12th under captain Daniel Webster who commanded Company C from Putnam Valley near Cortland Lake. The Cortland National Guard was organized on July 14, 1898. The first unit to be stationed in Cortland was the 1st Battalion of the New York State Militia; it was quartered at the barracks on Washington Street. On September 25, 1898, a second battalion of the militia was raised and encampment erected on School Street. On November 3, 1898, the 2nd Battalion of the New York State Militia joined forces with that from Albany to form a brigade under Brigadier General John A. Macdonald. The brigade patrolled duties in central New York until October 1899 when it moved to Buffalo where it garrisoned Fort Niagara. In 1903-04, two battalions were raised and again assigned to duty in central New York; these battalions were redesignated as brigades and eventually disbanded in 1907-08 as a result of reorganization within artillery divisions which then became part of infantry divisions. Cortland, New York is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Montgomery and Cortland counties. The first Europeans to visit Cortland were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his party in 1524. The name "Cortland" was derived from a Indian word meaning "divided country." There are several interpretations of what this means, but most likely it refers to the fact that there were two branches of the same family living in different parts of the town at different times. The first European settlers arrived around 1770 when Nicholas-Jacques Lafitte built a mill here. By 1825, there were over 100 people living in Cortlandtown, making it one of the largest villages on Long Island. After years of growth and development, however, by 1830 CortLAND had reached its peak and was home to upwards of 1,000 residents! However during the Panic Of 1837 many businesses closed their doors as investors pulled out due to low prices for goods exported from abroad; this led to an even further decline in population since few people could afford to move away from their homes. In 1840 John Wesley settled here with his family after leaving England for religious reasons. He started a Baptist church which quickly grew into one of the largest denominations on Long Island. In 1851 Java Addams moved her family here from Vermont after she became pregnant with her first child – she wanted to be close to her husband’s work force on Long Island so they could raise together a healthy child without having to worry about recalls or transportation costs back home. 2 years later (1853), Wilfred Owen married Anna Seward here while attending college at Oneonta (now Oneonta University). They would soon become involved in British radicalism and eventually emigrated back across America where they founded Trafalgar Square in London - one of history's most famous socialist organizations! Only three months after moving here Wilfred died along with nearly all members of his group whilst fighting against government oppression within Britain; an event that has been cited as one of society's leading examples of martyrdom! Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1792 by colonists from Connecticut and Rhode Island. The town became a city in 1851. The first Europeans tosight what is now Cortland were Dutch settlers who passed through the area on their way to Albany in 1614. A post office called "Welcoming" was established in 1792, and remained open until 1851. The first settler of the present town was James Fenton. He purchased land east of the Hudson River from the Lenape people and built a house thereon which he named "Fenton's Fort". In 1807, Fenton married Deborah Lovell; they had five children. In 1861, Cortland became a city under New York State law following the state's admission into the Union as a nation. This event is commemorated by Mayor John Larkin's proclamation that read: “This City of Cortland Was Admitted Into Our Union on this Fourth day of July In1861 By Order of His Excellency HENRY JAMES KEMBLE DUKES Governor Of New York” The original growth for Cortland came about because of its location at an crossingroads where two important railroads crossed each other (the Erie Canal and the Mohawk River). As these arteries grew traffic increased so did demand for goods and services available only within close range- making it difficult for farmers to bring their products all the way downstate or even upstate. So many businesses located hereabouts opened up that by 1850 it seemed like every family had their own store near where they lived! Today we still see this type of business activity as evident by numerous small businesses dotting downtown streets throughout our community- just another layer of evidence that when things are good here...they can be really good! Settlement began along both banks of what would become known as Canal Street; however most early development took place on west side blocks between Market Place and First Street which Frontenac Avenue served as transportation access point with general stores being located near train stations on Third Street (now Elmira Road) and Fifth Avenue (now Main Street). These days you'll find ample evidence that pioneer families shopped frequently at local hat shops along First Street’s length- something they could do affordably since there were few if any items accessible beyond 1 mile away! There also existed several blacksmiths/shopkeepers who worked directly alongside whitesmiths early on because no one wanted to risk having their work interfered with while transporting goods across county lines! One such shopkeeper is commonly referred to as “Father Time” due to his ability to maintain highly polished shoes belonging to various officials until recently! During much of its history Cortland experienced some fairly serious flooding events including panic attacks caused by torrential rains during winter times; however thankfully those times have all but vanished thanks largely to advances technology combined with rainwater recycling systems put into effect during recent years!!!
