Cortland, New York is a town in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, United States. It is part of the City of Cortland and was organized on November 1, 1802. The population was 5,901 at the 2010 census. The town has a rich military history dating back to its founding as a military outpost on the frontier of what is now upstate New York. The first fort in Cortland was built by General John Graves Simcoe in 1795 as part of his efforts to secure access to Lake Ontario for British forces. The fort served as an observation post and used local Indians as guides and scouts during this time period. In 1804, General George Washington ordered Fort Niagara be built nearby in order to better protect eastern NY from French aggression. The fort served as a garrison until it was surrendered to France on July 14, 1814 following their successful invasion of Canada. In 1821, Commodore David Dixon decided that Cortland would be the site for one of his new naval stations in anticipation of increased maritime activity around Great Lakes region due tothe American Revolution and War for Independence. He named the station "Fort Orange" after Governor James Ketchum's estate near Albany which had been confiscated during the revolution and given back to him by royal decree. With this new station came new duties for both officers and enlisted men including training for coastal defense against Indian attacks along with supplying goods and munitions needed by navy vessels docking at Fort Orange for repairs or operations off shore. In 1850, Fort Orange became known as "Chautauqua Point" after Commodore Dixon’s daughter who lived there until her death in 1865 aged 91 years old when she moved away from Chautauqua Falls into Syracuse Thanks also to Commodore Dixon’s widow Rebecca who later donated land adjacent to Chautauqua Point where Nassau College now stands Today renamed Coxe Hall after Rear Admiral David J Coxe ( Retired) Commander USN (Ret.) Cortland is a city in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 21,547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy metropolitan area. The first military gifts given to Cortland were smallpox vaccines and shot packets from the Continental Army in 1776. In 1814, Colonel James Fenton donated land to form the town of Fenton on the west side of what is now Watertown Square in honor of his father-in-law General John Armstrong, who helped lead American forces during the Mexican War. In 1815, Captain David Dickson contributed 1 acre (0.50 km2) for a public school in town which later became known as Cortland Academy. In 1861, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated an armory and guardhouse for Fort Drum on river's edge near present day Westchester Avenue and Clinton Street in honor of Commodore Vanderbilt's son Rear Admiral Samuel Pompano Pellegrino Jr., who commanded American forces during the American Civil War. In 1865 Commodore John Totten donated a large tract of land east of town center to become Fort Totten Park after he led American forces against Confederate troops at Antietam Creek Battlefield near present day Central Avenue and Elm Street in what is now northeast corner of downtown Cortland. On October 16th 1870 Governor Nelson Aldrich dedicated Sanitary Road (later State Route 9) through cortland as a ceremonial waypoint between Schenectady and Albany allowing easy access by wagon wagons carrying goods needed for agriculture or trade with New York City along this important artery linking up bothcounties. This road was also instrumental in helping develop what would become downtown Cortland into one of its most vibrant neighborhoods today with many businesses located on Main Street including restaurants such as Olive Garden & Dominos Pizza Corporation; banks such as Wells Fargo Bank & Trust Company; real estate firms such as Guggenheims Realty Company Incorporated; medical facilities including Sacred Heart Hospital & Medical Center; post office buildings including Oneonta Post Office building since 1918 when it moved from Oneonta to its current location on Broadway across from new high school enterprising students are lessening traffic congestion on streetscape that used to be gridlocked during peak hours
Cortland, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cortland-Milton-Ames School District and is home to the Cortland Community Museum. The village of Cortland was founded in 1796 by David Wilkinson and others as a sawmill town on an area now belonging to Geneva. In 1838, John Fenton donated land for a new courthouse, which became the nucleus of what would become Cortland. The first post office in Cortland opened in 1847. The village originally consisted of just a few homes and two churches; however, over time it developed into a larger community with about 150 residents when it annexed neighboring villages of Amherst, Geneva, Ithaca, and North Chili in 1898. The Village Board voted to rename itself "Cortland" on July 1, 1912 after its then-mayor Augustus Prentiss III made the suggestion during a committee meeting that coincided with national commemorations marking the centennial of American independence. “We have had many visitors from outlying villages who have been greatly interested in learning about our early history and customs," said Village Clerk Lois Tompkins at that time." Subsequently, other towns within the school district also changed their names - most notably Oneonta (1928) and Southport (1968).

However, during World War II Cortland experienced some major destruction as part of the Manhattan Project; its downtown area was completely destroyed by bombing raids in 1945. After the war, Cortland started to decline again and lost much of its importance as a business center. However, it has since recovered somewhat and is now considered an important cultural environment within the city limits.
Cortland was founded by the Dutch in 1614 as a trading post on the site of present-day Albany. The town grew rapidly, and by 1785 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1814, Cortland became part of the United States of America and was renamed Albany.
