Cortland, New York is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 3,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1786 by Nicholas Cortland and his family. The name comes from the land on which it sits: cortland means "ridge of salt" because of its location near the salt works in Schenectady County. The first settler in Cortland was Nicholas Cortland Jr., who arrived about 1786. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it for his father, Nicholas Cortland Sr.. In 1824, John Purdy settled here and began to grow corn and other crops; he also raised hogs and cattle. In 1829, Cornelius Holland moved to Cortland from Westchester County and started a flour mill. By 1830, there were around 20 people living in Cortland. As early as 1840, there were three stores in town: two grocery stores and one feed store operated by Arents & Van Houten (later renamed Girdwood). The post office opened in 1841; it was called "Newburgh." In 1846-47, Daniel Webster of Rochester served as an elector for New York State at Saratoga Springs; during his stay here he visited several villages within easy travel of Albany including Cortland which he found to be sparsely populated with only five families resident on public lands totaling just over . His report back to Congress included recommendations that new state boundaries be drawn so that land within present-day Cortland would become part of Schoharie County while eastward extending into what are now Chemung County and Orleans County would become part of Rensselaer County! In 1850-51 when Ezra Cornell came to live here he formed an agricultural society with some 200 members with a main goal being to improve farming techniques so that more subsistence farmers could participate in capitalist productionlines—a trend then gaining momentum throughout much of America due primarily to European immigration! By 1860-61 when mail service between Albany and Schenectady Via Syracuse had been established via stagecoach connection through west central New York along present day Route 9 – one year after the opening of Oneida Lake – there were 10 businesses operating out of town with no less than 24 residents employed therein! A railroads boon followed soon thereafter when Buffalo cotton trader Moses Minton leased 1 million acres (and future towns) northward from Federal government for $5 per acre – all without any compensation given either side! This vast piecemeal grant generated further development across what are now Mohawk Valley townships such as Glendon (now Ontario), Stormont (now Utica), Uniontown (now Lancaster), North Greece Village (now Greece), South Athens Village (now Corinthia), Bedford Falls Village (now Suffern), Scranton Borough (now Simcoe City) among others before finally coming together under the name Erie Lackawanna Railroad in 1901! With this new infrastructure came increased passenger traffic numbering more than 100 daily revenue cars by 1910 leading naturally into larger industrial areas such as tool making capacity becoming available at nearby Bethlehem Steel Company’s major worksite at Lackawanna Junction where rolling stock became interchangeable between various railroad companies starting operations on July 1st 1896!]

Cortland, New York is a town in upstate New York, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Erie Canal and the French word "corte" meaning "road". It is located near the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The first permanent settler in Cortland was Nicholas Day who arrived in 1786 and platted what became Cortland County. In 1807, Gideon Peck built a sawmill on the Chenango River which served as a center for lumber processing until around 1860 when machines started becoming available to do this work more efficiently. A post office was established at Cortland in 1827 and remained in operation until it closed in 1902. In 1875, stagecoach driver John Hylan founded Hylan's Heaven Feeding Station (now known as Hudson's Bay) on what is now Main Street just west of State Route 9Ll. This feeder station provided food for passengers travelling between Elmira and Buffalo while also offering refreshments to passengers along their journey
On July 24, 1795, the first session of the Cortland County Board of Supervisors was held. The commissioners were George Washington White and John P. Barnes. The first town in Cortland County was called "New Hartford." It was established on October 14, 1805 by a group of settlers led by Samuel Morse.
