Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Erie Canal and its path through the area. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1724 and was named after Captain Hendrick Cortlandt who led a survey party through the area in 1725. In 1814, Cortland County was created from parts of Albany and Schenectady counties. The village of Cortlandtville located within present-day Cortland Township was platted in 1828 by John Payson and other early settlers. It became a part of the new town of Utica on February 14, 1830.
