Cortland's first coffee house opened in 1846. It was known as the Albany Coffee House and served coffee from a small roaster on Washington Street. In 1861, the Cortland Coffee House became Cortland Cafe and served coffee from a larger roaster on Clinton Avenue. In 1865, the Cortland Coffee House moved to its present location on Webster Avenue and continued serving coffee until 1978.
Cortland, New York is a town in upstate New York. It was first settled by Germans in the 17th century, and became an American state in 1821. The population of Cortland as of the 2010 census was 26,839. The townsite of Cortland was patented to George Clinton on February 20, 1786, and named for him. The town was founded on October 14, 1814 by James Fenton and others under license from the crown. On December 5, 1824, it became a part of the newly created United States of America. The first post office in Cortland opened on November 12, 1827. The present building replaced an earlier structure that burned down on May 25, 1825. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Cortland saw heavy fighting including two engagements with Confederate forces at Blackwater Creek on July 1 and October 28 respectively; these events are commemorated by rifle pits still extant near Main Street and US 9W east of downtown Cortland today. One resident who fought for Union forces during the war is General John Atherton who campaigns across central New York State from his home hereabouts every year during Veterans Day weekend as part of his "Athertonfest" celebration which has included music and various activities throughout these years since its inception in 1998

Cortland, New York is a small town in upstate New York and has been around since the 17th century. It is located on the banks of the Hudson River, east of Albany and west of Ithaca. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. In 1814, Cortland became part of the United States after the Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812. It was named for General John filmmaking Cortland (1760-1837), an American officer who fought in that conflict. The first store in Cortland opened in 1792. By 1800, there were 10 stores and 1 post office in the town. The first school was built in 1802 and served grades K-8 until 1948. In 1865, Cortland became a village when it merged with other villages to form what is now Mohawk County. The population peaked at 5,000 during World War II but declined to 2,500 by 1960 due to rapid demography and migration to surrounding townships and counties. Today, there are only about 2 dozen people living in cortLAND Since its founding as a Village, Cortland has seen many changes: In 1965-1966 when Mohawk County united with other villages into what is now Mohawk County 1) Property values increased as more people moved into town from outlying areas 2) More businesses opened up because it had become easier to get land here than elsewhere 3) Some residents left for better-paying jobs outside of town while others chose to stay because they found amenities such as schools and shopping available only within walking distance
Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. The name is from the Iroquois word "koronta" meaning "headquarters." The first post office in Cortland was established on October 25, 1817. The present town was formed from part of the town of Rome in 1828. It gained its current name from the village of Cortlandtown (now part of Rome) which was named for General John Forbes who had commanded an American army during the War of 1812 and later became a U.S. Senator from New York. The townsite that now forms CortlandtOWN was laid out by Peter Kavanagh and others in 1824 as Lots 6 & 7 on what is now Route 9 south of Watervliet Lake. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn and raised cattle but soon realized there were no suitable places to build mills or other businesses when they arrived hereabouts because ofhillocks and swampy areas which limited water flow for farming purposes and also because nearby Rochester had more available land for settlement than did Cortland county). They therefore erected several small brick buildings near their homes to represent their hope that some day they would be able to develop this piece of what they considered valuable territory In 1827-28 one group led by Captn David Fenton started development work on lots 8-10 east sideof Watervliet Lake where they built a sawmill which began operation in 1830; this helped support early growth in the area as milling traffic increased bringing with it new jobs into town In 1840 one group led by Ebenezer Brown acquired lots 12 & 13 west sideof Watervliet Lake where they added another sawmill operated by John Doherty before starting production at their present site in1845 This continued until 1865 when it closed due to lack of competition . In 1860 one group led by Alfred Hickey bought lot 14 northeast cornerof Watervliet Lake from Ebenezer Brown This property still remains vacant however it does contain evidence suggesting early human habitation here dating back 10,000 years
