The first permanent settler in what is now Corning, New York was Nicholas Argosy, who arrived in 1672. By the time of the Revolutionary War, the town had a population of about seventy-five people. It soon became an important center for trade and commerce within the region. In 1792, it was attacked by French forces and burned to the ground. The town again flourished during the antebellum period until it came under attack from Native Americans in 1814. There were several attempts at settlement before finally being granted status as a village in 1835. The village grew rapidly during the late 19th century until it reached its peak around 1920 with a population of about one hundred people. After declining sharply in the early 21st century, Corning slowly declined beginning around 2005 when all but two of its buildings were destroyed by fire
