Corning, New York is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. The population was 9,839 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Broome County and one of the seven towns in the county. The other six are Binghamton, Cheektowaga, Cortland, Ithaca, Oneonta and Saratoga Springs. The Town of Corning was organized on February 17th 1858 from part of the Town of Onondaga. The first store in Corning was built by Israel Putnam on Main Street in 1859-60. At that time there were only a few houses and no mills or factories. By 1862 there were two stores and four woolen mills located around what is now downtown Corning which produced clothing for local consumption and export to Europe as well as textiles for American markets. In 1865 Isaac Perkins erected a gristmill on Sodus Creek which became known as "the Perkins Mill". In 1870 John Prentice established a sawmill on what is now East Side Road near today's Post Office building; this mill continued to produce lumber until it closed in 1971 due to urban renewal projects nearby. In 1876 Zenas Hagopian opened a bakery which continues to operate today under the name "Hagopian's". In 1908 Edward Ayer arrived from Canada with his family and founded Ayer Drug Company which still operates today as an international drugstore chain with over 650 stores worldwide including 36 U.S., 15 Canadian provinces/territories and 2 Mexican states/territories across 16 countries including Puerto Rico (where Ayer Drugs is headquartered).
