Corning is a city in Upstate New York, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cayuga County. The city is named after Corning Glass Works, which manufactured glass products from 1825 to 1945. The first Europeans to visit what is now Corning were traders and pilgrims on their way to visit the trading post at Niagara Falls in 1776. George Washington and his entourage passed through the area on their way from Albany to Quebec City in 1777. French explorer Jacques Cartier discovered the area in 1536 while traveling southward along the St Lawrence River. English settlers arrived sometime before 1624 when John DeWitt landed at present-day Corning with his family on Catawba Island. In 1825, Nicholas Simpson founded the American Glass Works as a manufacturer of windows and other glass products for commercial buildings and churches in Syracuse, New York; he became its largest shareholder and president until his death in 1892. In 1895, American Glass Works became part of The Clorox Company when that company merged with The Boston Manufacturing Company of Massachusetts (MBC). In 1907 MBC sold its interest in American Glass Works to fellow MBC subsidiary The Loews Corporation for $1 million dollars ($ billion today). The production of high-quality window glass began during World War II with help from thousands of war veterans who had been drafted into military service by their companies or governments under duress or coercion; many such employees continued working long after hostilities ended because they could not return home due to restrictions placed on them by their employers or governments. Corning, New York is a city in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 29,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chenango County. The town of Corning was first settled in 1792 byavers and traders from Albany who were looking for new land to farm after their losses in the British and French markets. In 1814, part of what is now Corning was purchased by Nicholas de Forest from the Clinton family for $4,000. In 1825, James Kieft donated land to establish an agricultural college which became known as Cornell University. The village of Corning grew up around these institutions and remained so until 1941 when all three came under military jurisdiction as part of World War II curfew regulations. After the war ended, Corning reverted back to its original Dutch name "Hagerman". The city proper was platted in 1828 by Thaddeus Stevens under his Archibald Robertson patent. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was surveyed that year and quickly grew to over 1,200 during the early years of its existence as a village due in large part to heavy industry being established here including two sawmills (one still operating), four tanneries (one still running), five brick kilns (all now demolished), a flour mill and several other small businesses. By 1840 there were also twenty-four residences built; most were single-family dwellings with outbuildings such as barns or outhouses on property used for farming or grinding corn into meal or flour. In 1830 John Morse opened a gristmill that provided power for local transportation and began producing lumber for buildings and furniture; this helped begin suburbanization within the city limits with people moving away from downtown towards newer developments near Lakeshore Drive where they could get good jobs manufacturing things like plumbing fixtures or automobiles while still having access to public transportationations like boats or trains going into Manhattan By 1850 much of what is now eastern Chenango County had been developed with many farms having been replaced by townships such as East Aurora and North Syracuse ; east Chenango County especially became well-served by railroad lines which allowed goods to be delivered rapidly throughout much of central New York Territory . This rapid development led some residents migrating westward overland through what is now western Ontario County into what is now Niagara Falls before turning east again into central New York Territory . In 1861 Augustus Kelley subdivided virgin forest lands along Buffalo Creek northward from present day Elmira into lots measuring one acre each containing one vote plus 10 acres Improvements Act granted right thereto including road rights infield lot frontage on creek side 50 feet wide 3 rods deep Lot No’s on Side Lots Nos’t shall exceed 20 feet long & 10 feet wide rendered admissible without groundwater supply
