The Corning Coast Guard Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of coast guard memorabilia. The museum was founded in 1928 by officers of the town’s Volunteer Fire Department. The first Coast Guard Post in Corning was established in 1916 and the first lifeboat ever stationed at Corning Harbor was a converted fishing boat, the SS Alma, donated by Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Mason in 1922. Today, the Coast Guard Museum has more than 50 different types of coast guard artifacts from around the world on display including a replica of a small sailing vessel used for coastal patrols during World War II; an American-made dredge used for excavation during Prohibition; and an original model Searchlight used by night commands to find stranded ships during World Wars I and II. One of the museum’s most popular attractions is its collection of vintage searchlights dating back to 1905! These powerful searchlights could be seen lining up along the harbor mouth during naval operations or shining out from homes during holiday celebrations.

Corning, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Corning" comes from an Iroquois word meaning "cornered hill." The town was settled in 1800 by Germans from Ansbach, Germany and named after Andreas Corning who had earlier founded a glassworks here. The first post office opened in 1802. In 1805 the village of Corning was created from parts of the town of Granville and the hamlet of Whitehall. In 1827 the village became a city and was renamed Corning after Samuel Saratoga Cooke (1787-1857), president of Yale University and one of its trustees. In 1830 John Sargeant erected a stone Greek Revival architecture courthouse on Main Street which still stands today as one of Utica's most prominent buildings. A fire destroyed this building in 1903 but it was rebuilt with assistance from local citizens and it now houses Utica's Bureau of Arts & Cultural Affairs. A logging camp called Woolley Station was located near present day Town Square before being abandoned around 1915 due to changing Forest Service regulations concerning timber sales west Of Syracuse (now Utica). The current cornered development around Main Street began to take shape about 1920 when two families bought what is now lot 2 in front of Post Office Park for $10 per acre from Ebenezer Dix who had leased it from James Doherty for $2 per acre back in 1826; during his lifetime Dix donated over 100 acres (40 hectares) to build up the parkland that currently includes much of downtown Corning including both Post Office Square and State Capitol Building; lots 1-3 went for $15/acre each while lot 4 fetched only $5/acre until 1951 when it cost just $25/acre to purchase outright by Gouverneur Morris as part as part compensation for acquisition by New York State following its purchase by Peter Schuyler’s heirs under Public Law 80-465 – “An Act To Regulate Commerce With Foreign Nations” – also known as “The Schuyler Purchase” In 1952 an additional parcel on lot 4 became available resulting in yet another rename to Governors Island: Governors Island National Monument following designation by President Harry Truman on February 16th, 1953 pursuant to Executive Order 12920 dated January 20th,1948 which authorizes establishment within national monuments programs certain properties parcels situ'd along Long Island Sound between Sayre Beach Point Light Beach & Huntington Harbor - such parcels comprising approximately 71 acres or more situated within 250 feet wide central reservation bordered slightly eastwardly & southwardly by rugged cliffs overlooking Huntington Harbour consisting mainly (>80%) wooded upland lying upon sandspit below mean high water level...the islands consists largely (>80%) sand with few trees or rocks except for some small amounts hidden among many large boulders forming headlands offshore...This area has been intensively hunted since prehistory including extensive burningof coastal scrub prior to European settlement leaving behind numerous sandy bluff dunes typical Atlantic coastal plain habitats similar to those found today on nearly all major islands off Long Island Sound"... map depicting property boundaries

The city's rapid growth during this time led to a wave of immigration from Europe which caused many buildings and infrastructure such as transportation systems to be built in new or expanded neighborhoods such as Midtown Manhattan and Chinatown.
