The area that now Cohoes was first settled by Europeans in 1614 as part of the Purchase of Albany from the Dutch. The village was founded on the east bank of the Susquehanna River about two miles upstream from where it flows into Lake Ontario. In 1784, Nahant Township and parts of Clinton Township were organized from what are now Cohoes and other villages along the west bank of the river to form one large town. In 1815, when Niagara Falls became a national park due to its role in helping lead to American independence, Cohoes’s eastern border changed from water to land because all but a few acres (0.25 km²) lay within Canada until that point. This event also led to an increase in development around Cohoes because most people who had owned property before then sold it after becoming citizens of America.
