The New York Navy was a branch of the United States Armed Forces that operated from 1775 to 1945. The navy played an important role in American history and ran the blockade of Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The navy also served in World War II, playing a significant role in the Battle of Midway and other campaigns. The navy was dissolved following World War II and its assets were divided among several different branches of the armed forces. The decommissioning process for the navy was slow and various communities in upstate New York offered their help with maintaining naval installations until they were finally disbanded in 1945. This article will focus on one community, Cohoes, which played an important role in Naval Deployment gift history. In 1572, Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed into what is now Albany Bay on his ill-fated voyage across America as part of Giovanni da Verrazzano's attempt to find a route to India by sailing around Cape Horn. As he crossed over into this new continent he named it Nieuw Amsterdam after his home city of Venice, Italy. Dutch traders soon settled at what is now Cohoes (Cohoe) on Long Island Sound and began trading with Native Americans such as the Lenape. In 1624, when English colonists arrived on Long Island, they too began trading with Native Americans and named their settlement Nassau after Count Corvo's family estate near Naples, Italy where they had been living since 1494. Nassau continued to be used as a placename for some time before it became known officially as Cohoes in 1634 when Samuel de Champlain founded Jamestown on North Point on Long Island Sound opposite Nassau Harbor; later called Plymouth Colony because England had designated land at Plymouth Rock as its first colony site east of Newfoundland). During King George III's American Revolution (1776-83), warships manned by British sailors were sent against Patriot rebels operating out of Staten Island; however these operations failed due to poor navigation by British commanders who mistook Staten Island for Islip Head or Fresh Kills Roads leading into Manhattan proper! A small detachment under Commodore John Byng landed at Sandy Hook Heights late one night aboard HMS Pembroke (the first ship ever commissioned by Britain) outside Brooklyn Ferry terminal early next morning intent upon taking control of that point but found no resistance! However local Patriots took cover behind trees along Shore Road while Captain Byng disembarked his troops heavilyarmed only to be pursueen by militia firing from nearby Fort Greene! Despite being outnumbered threetoone ashore Byng made successful escapes pursued by gunfire back onto HMS Pembroke! These events led directly to Crown Prince George's orders authorising use of warships against insurgents inside America!!! Cohnes' importance cannot be overemphasized...during both Revolutionary and Civil wars numerous navies were dispatched here including: USS Constitution under Commander James Kappes 1807 - 1812 USS Merrimack under Commander David Dixon 1813 -1815 USS Hancock under Commander Edward Everett Chapin 1816 –1819 USS Constitution again commanded by Kappe 1821 –1823 USS Essexunder Commodore Isaac Watts 1830 –1833 HMCS Montreal 1830 –1831 HMS Dragonfly/HMS Unicorn commanded by Rear Admiral John Monckton 1830 –1835 HMS Jupiter commanded by Commodore Augustus Steedman 1840–44 HMS Repulse Under Commodore William Cornwallis 1944–45

Cohoes is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Broome and Yates counties. The population was 9,463 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Cohoes County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Cohoes were French fur traders in 1624. The Dutch founded a trading post here in 1638, but abandoned it after a military engagement with English forces near present-day Schenectady. In 1714, an English cartographer, Samuel Purchas, visited Cohoes and described it as "a small place by the side of a great river". In 1747, John Tryon erected a fortification here to protect his horse herds during the French and Indian War; he named it Fort Tryon after George Washington's father-in-law and commander of American forces in that conflict. In 1801, when New York became an Ohio Territory, Cohoes was incorporated as part of that territory. However, because its boundaries did not match those of Ohio's then-larger towns such as Athens (to the east), Zanesville (to the west), or Wooster (to the northwest), Cohoes declined into obscurity until 1836 when Timothy Gillett purchased land near present-day downtown for $1 The village began to grow rapidly due to waves of immigrants settling here following outbreaks of cholera in 1818 and 1819. By 1830 there were over 100 residents living in cottage villages scattered around downtown streets; most people worked either crop growing or fishing on nearby streams while they awaited shipment from points northward via boat or wagon across Buffalo Bayou. In 1840s rapid growth resumed due to new irrigation systems being developed leading to dramatic reductions in water usage which led to increased production for local mills products including flour for religious services at First Congregational Church beginning around this time As milling became more important coming out of late 1800s rural exodus increased with many farmers moving back into larger towns/cities looking for opportunities like cheaper land prices closer to city outskirts instead of having their whole farm operation devoted to flour grinding
Cohoes was a small town in upstate New York, located on the Mohawk River. The first European to visit Cohoes was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who named it Giovinforte after his nephew Giovanni de' Verrazzano. The first permanent settlers were Dutch colonists in 1624. The Dutchtown of Cohoes was burned down in 1675 by the English during the Pequot War. In 1753, when New Netherland became part of the United States of America, Cohoes became part of Albany County and remained as such until 1821. In 1831, Cohoes incorporated as a village under the name "Cohoe". It increased its population to 1,500 by 1860 and 2,000 by 1900; however, its population peaked at 5,000 in 1920 and decreased to 4,500 by 1950. In 1970 it had only 3 residents remaining; however, it has since experienced an increase in population averaging over 10 people per year since 1990.
