Cohoes, New York is a town in upstate New York, located on the Mohawk River. The population was 6,307 at the 2010 census. Cohoes was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1634 and became part of Albany County when that county was created from parts of Holland and Ulster counties in 1717. In 1814, the area around Cohoes was sold to Colonel Nathaniel Parker for 120 acres (4 km²). In 1827, three-quarters of the town's land had been bought from its original settlers for $1 per acre (0.50 zloty). The town's first school opened in 1828. It continued operation untilumbing into bankruptcy in 1865 due to poor financial management. A new school building was erected and it continued operations until 1959. In 1860, Cohoes acquired its own post office which operated until 1963. The village of Cohoes developed around what is now downtown Cohoes between 1862 and 1870 as more people began moving into the area to escape farm life during the American Civil War era. By 1879, all but two homes in downtown were owned by men over 25 years old or married women with children under 25 years old; there were no homes left unoccupied after that date. Downtown businessesmens organizations such as Odd Fellows Lodge No 1 established their presence here early on while other local institutions like First Baptist Church and Stonington Presbyterian Church flourished during this time period including Ladies Home Journal writing cellist Anna Chapin Mazur and landscape architect George Washington Smith among others. One resident recalled "Downtown looked like a small town—the only thing outgrowing our dwellings were some boardwalks reaching down to where Main Street crossed".[2] This rapid growth came about because much of North America saweer at an embryonic stage due to Britain's Emancipation Proclamation which announced freedom for slaves beginning on July 4th 1863 however many Americans did not have access to this right so many began migrating westward seeking opportunities unavailable east of the Mason-Dixon Line including those living in what is now Cohoes.[3] With few exceptions most everyday items such as water fountains, streetlights and even light switch covers were made out of plastic sheeting or wirewrap[4] making typical household objects like these hard or impossible to replace well into the 21st century given advances technology especially when it comes to replaced components eases obsolescence concerns however with advancements technology also comes advances costs associated with replacement parts oftenentimes exceeding cost of originals

In 1784, when the Revolutionary War began, Cohoes residents sided with America against Great Britain. In 1795, after the Treaty of Paris ended the war, Cohoes became part of Albany County. In 1814, when Albany County was dissolved and its lands divided among several new counties, Cohoes remained within Albany County. From 1821 to 1827 it was part of Saratoga County; from 1827 to 1840 it was in Onondaga County; and from 1840 to 1861 it was in Broome County.
