Cohoes (population: 20,000) is a town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It is bordered by the towns of Alfred and Geneva to the east, Champlain to the north, Oswego County to the northwest, and Rome to the south. The population was 41,236 at the 2000 census. The name "Cohoes" comes from an Iroquois word meaning "place where they gathered mushrooms." The first European settlers in Cohoes arrived in 1624 with Captain John Smith and his party on an exploratory journey through what is now upstate New York. They named their new settlement after Sir George Washington's native land of Virginia. By 1764, however, there were only about 10 people living in Cohoes; most of these had come from Ulster County in Ireland. In 1815, when Albany passed a resolution recognizing statehood for New York, Cohoes became part of it as well. In 1830-31 Isaac Brock built a small farmstead near what is now downtown Cohoes on land that was donated by his brother-in-law Jacob Leisler. He called it Brockville because that's where he got his start as a farmer. When Albany passed another resolution recognizing statehood for New York again in 1832, local farmers decided to name their town after themselves – cohoes being Irish for "cabbage." The first store opened in 1834 at Main Street and Mohawk Road; it was called The Republican until 1881 when it changed its name to The Democrat because of political differences between Republicans and Democrats over representation within the legislature at this time. In 1907 First National Bank built a building on Park Avenue which served as its headquarters until 1961 when it moved across town into one of Albany's new skyscrapers., also known as First National Plaza (). After years of discussion among businesses owners and developers about whether or not to build a plaza next door to First National Bank Building due to noise pollution from traffic coming down Park Avenue (and other nearby buildings), plans were finally approved in 1990 by then Borough President William Hickey and Mayor James McGinnity amid public outcry over proposed developments adjacent to First National Plaza which would have resulted in large noise levels during weekday business hours.; The plaza was dedicated on October 24th 1990 by Borough President McGinnITY withGov't support
