Cohoes, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Cohoes was laid out by Alexander Hamilton on December 12, 1788 and named for Colonel John Cohoes who had fought in the American Revolution. The first post office in Cohoes opened on January 1, 1802. The town's first store was built on what is now Main Street and it soon became an important commercial center for the area. In 1830, a school was built on what is now Second Avenue and it served as the local elementary school until 1938 when it moved to its present location on Third Avenue. During World War II, Cohoes assisted in supplying war materials to other towns in Erie County while also manufacturing munitions such as tanks and planes at its own factory located on Third Avenue which continued until 1959. After the war ended, many businesses closed or were converted into housing units so that Cohoes could rebound economically during the postwar period although some residents did leave to establish new communities elsewhere in the county after they realized their economic opportunities hereabouts had not diminished significantly since their days as small-town industrialists.
