Cohoes, New York is a community located in the Towns of Cohoes and Vestal in upstate New York. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 17th century. The present-day town was formed from the merger of two settlements, Cohoes and Vestal, on July 1, 1854. The area now known as Cohoes was originally inhabited by the Mohawk people. A group of English settlers arrived in 1664 and began to develop the area around what is now Cohoes. They named their settlement after Colleen Comroe, daughter of Sir William Comroe. In 1668, a group of Irish Catholic refugees arrived in America and founded Cahokia on the north bank of the Mohawk River near what is now Vestal. The English settlers called their new settlement Mohawktown because they believed that the Mohawk people were still living there at that time. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Cohoes was John Duffy who built a house on land he purchased from Chief Joseph Brant in 1746. Duffy served as justice of peace for western New York during General George Washington's presidency and later became an important figure in Republican politics in Upstate New York. He also developed a large barn and other buildings which remain extant today within the boundaries of Cohoes Village Hall complex. In 1799, Daniel Webster purchased 2 acres (0 km2) along with others surrounding him for $1 per acre (3 square meters). This property would become known as Webster Park after him and his wife owned it for many years until it sold to developer Edwin Ladd for $27 million dollars on November 14, 1984。 At this point much of what makes modern day Cohoe so vibrant comes from its proximity to Schenectady County; however some aspects date back much earlier such as when merchant Nicholas Swartz bought 640 acres (250 hectares) adjacent to his current home on Green Pond Road west of downtown on October 24, 1786 (). With development continuing apace throughout post-war America through suburban sprawl; places like Sleepy Hollow (), White Sands Beach (), Canandaigua (), Syracuse ()and Rome can be found all within easy driving distance; this has led to increased traffic congestion along I-787/I-390 interchange just outside town limits – but residential areas like Ravenna Heights () continue to maintain cultural relevance well into tomorrow’s era!
