The Army has been presence in Cohoes, NY since the Revolutionary War. The first known American military activity was in 1778 when a detachment of New York City soldiers were sent to help defend the town against an attack by the British. The town's first battery was established in 1779 and was manned by soldiers from Cohoes and nearby towns. In 1802, the state of New York adopted a resolution authorizing the erection of a military monument in honor of General George Washington. The monument was dedicated on December 10th, 1802. In 1811, Colonel John Nevin purchased land on what is now Mohawk Street between Main Street and State Road No. 9 for use as an army post. The post served as a depot for supplies and troops during the war with Mexico. It also housed a hospital for wounded soldiers. After the war, Col Nevin sold his property to the government for $2,500 cash and moved his family to Cohoes permanently. In 1865, Major General James Silliman decided to move his headquarters from White Plains to Albany because of increasing tensions between America and Great Britain over issues such as slavery and tariffs. In order to accommodate Silliman's needs, part of Fort Augustus (now Albany) was converted into an army garrison called Camp Grant which included barracks for 1,200 men plus some artillery pieces and stores buildings etc.. After several years of construction it became operational on February 15th 1870 under command of First Lieutenant Charles Meigs USMCRD who had replaced Captain Augustus Davenport USMC who had been transferred from Fort Augustus). On July 11th 1870 Union General Nelson AEM Morrill relieved First Lieutenant Meigs after he captured Pocantico Hill along with 20 cannonballs used by Confederate forces during their retreat from West Point following their defeat at Battle Of Bull Run). On November 21st 1870 Camp Grantwas renamed Fort Drummond after Rear Admiral Alexander Drummond RNturned general commanding all naval forces in New York Harbor- Commander Ninth Naval District- Commander Western District- Commander Eighth Naval District which included all active United States Navy vessels in that area including USS Constitution (26 guns), USS Perry (12 guns), USS Sligo (5 guns), USS Astoria (3guns)and USS Griggs (1gun). During World War II there were several changes take place within the army at Fort Drummond including: 1)establishment of Airborne Command Post HQ; 2)the conversion of armory building into Headquarters Battalion; 3)the additionof Barracks #1A & #2B; 4)the inauguration of Wounded Knee Brigade HQ; 5)the creationof Special Forces Regiment HQ/Commanding Officer’s Quarters; 6)the induction into service’s “Tenth Mountain Division” consisting only OF4 battalions commanded by two lieutenant colonels but incorporating support battalion(s)); 7]staffing up raised women units such as Infantry Battalions 101st & 102nd Airborne Divisions etc.; 8]eningrad campaign participation with establishment 8th Armored Infantry Brigade Combat Team led by MajGen Lewis Biddle USAF DLC commander who later became Commanding General United States Army Europe); 9]arnothing available status quo ante while other commands such as Signal CorpsHQ& Garrison Support Units were reactivated or enlarged

Cohoes, New York is a village in the town of Cohoes, Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Mohawk Valley region. The village was founded by early Dutch settlers in 1764 and incorporated as avillage on March 10, 1802. The first settler in Cohoes was Johannes van der Velde who arrived in 1764 from Holland. He built a log cabin on what is now the corner of Main Street and Veterans Boulevard. Van der Velde's son-in-law Christian de Witt donated land to the village for a Methodist church and cemetery in 1792. In 1800, John Slingerland donated land to Cohoes for school purposes. In 1814 Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land to Cohoes for an academy he had been planning to establish in Albany but never completed. In 1835–36 Elias Boudreau offered land for a canal linking up with the Erie Canal near Utica but no one took up his offer because there were too many other interests vying for space on that tract of land. A new offer was made by James Wadleigh which included 3 acres (1 km2) of present day Main Street along with property located north of it onVeterans Boulevard which would become known as "the Boudreau farm." This second donation helped put Cohoes on the map as an agricultural center with great potential for development.. The first post office opened in Cohoes on October 6, 1837 under the name "Albany." By 1850 there were over 100 residents living within the limits of present day Cohoes Village lattice square having originally been laid out into lots around milepost 4½ (now Third Avenue). There were also several gristmills and sawmills operating within walking distance of downtown cells where flour could be bought or sold local farmers could process lumber into boards or posts not only providing economic justification for their existence but also giving rise to some social mores associated with artisanal production: these buildings are still extant today including Grange Hall Schoolhouse which served grades K-12 from1847 until 1960 when it burned down; Meeting House Block; First Unitarian Church (now Second Unitarian Church); Asbridge Lumber Mill; Whalebone Row Drug Store; Mrs Fenton's Bakery & Cafe;Mr Fenton's Mechanic Shop; Mr Fenton's Furniture Store; Masonic Temple No 2 located east end ofMain Street next to later Mrs Fenton's Bakery & Cafe A water system was installed between 1860 and 1865 by Moses Sheehan following plans provided by George Stephenson – Sweeney did not live long enough to see this project through - thus ending any aspirations among those who might have contributed towards its realization that Town Lots # 7-10 should be developed into streetscape beautification features similar to those seen today around Park Slope neighborhoods such as Prospect Heights or Downtown Manhattan Beach . The Village has since undergone growth stages all reflective of its location atop one major artery while remaining relatively isolated from most aspects both commercial and residential outside its immediate vicinity ensuring continued vitality despite occasional detractors questioning whether “Cohoes” really existed anymore
