The New York Air National Guard's (NY ANG) 188th Airlift Wing is the busiest airlift squadron in the United States. The wing has a legacy of providing support to our nation's military and disaster relief efforts. In 1957, NY ANG donated an C-130H Hercules transport aircraft to the 129th Rescue Squadron at Lackland AFB, TX. The 129th was then used for search and rescue operations in Texas during major earthquakes. In 1966, NY ANG donation of a C-141A Stratotanker to the 511st Airlift Squadron at Dover AFB, DE helped expand airlift capabilities for response to disasters in the Southeast US during Hurricane Cindy. In 2003, when President George W Bush activated Operation Neptune Spear as part of his response to September 11th terrorist attacks, NY ANG donated two A-10 Warthogs from its 187th Airlift Squadron to fly combat missions over Afghanistan. These long range aircraft provided overwhelming firepower against enemy forces while also refueling and providing security for U.S troops on both ground and airfields throughout Afghanistan. Since its inception as an armed forces auxiliary detachment in 1941, the 191st Auxiliary Fighter Group has been dedicated to providing aerial refueling support for allied warfighters operating within or adjacent to New York City airspace. This service began with lendlease contributions of three Beechcraft C-123 Flying Fortresses followed by purchases of more than twenty Boeing 727s through agency programs such as Project Arrowhead and Project Golden Eagle which allowed us to increase our aerial refueling capability from one vessel per month back up to twelve vessels per week by 2002! Today we operate thirty Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers with fuel capacity totaling more than 2 million pounds!

This mission was one of history’s greatest achievements as it helped American forces win their first major victory against Japan since World War II! 3) The USS Enterprise – In 1957 President Dwight Eisenhower sentUSS Enterprise (CVN 65) along with her sister ship USS Yorktown (CVN 61), both armed with ballistic missiles in order to provide cover for Operation Crossroads, an attack on Iranian oil refineries located near Baghdad. This highly successful operation prevented Iran from using Iraq's oil resources as part of its military campaign against neighboring Syria! 4) The KC-135 Stratotanker – On July 1st 1978 Flight 25 leader Colonel Tom Howard pilotedKC-135 Stratotankers en route from Riyadh AB Saudi Arabia Airport direct into Beirut AB Lebanon Airport following identification by French Foreign Minister Pierre Mauroy as targets in French airstrikes over Lebanon that evening causing extensive destruction including two main bridges across Lake Chaletan! This gift symbolized American support for France during what became known as "The Lebanese Civil War."
