The history of coffee in Canandaigua, New York goes back to the early 1800s. The first European to visit this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who named it Nantucket after his ship, the Santa Maria. He sighted what he thought were two islands, but when he landed on one, he realized that it was actually a peninsula. He called it Nantucket because of its resemblance to the key island off the coast of Italy. In 1736, Englishman John Smith sailed into what is now Canandaigua and discovered an extensive coffee plantation. He brought some of this coffee back to England and started selling it there. This allowed him to become very rich and powerful. In 1812, American Commodore James Monroe sent a squadron under Rear Admiral Israel Putnam to explore the eastern coastline of North America and discovered what is now Canandaigua Harbor. They found a large coffee plantation with over 1 million beans waiting for export! By 1860, coffee had become so important in America that President Abraham Lincoln decided to start exporting it as well. At this time, Canandaigua had already become one of America’s most important Coffee Ports! It still is today! The local industry has continued To grow Strong through recent years with many companies coming and going but our name still stands strong –Coffee Town USA!

Coffee was first grown in the area now known as Canandaigua, New York, in the early 1800s. The earliest coffee trees were planted by Dutch farmers in what is now South Orange County. Coffee beans were brought from Indonesia and other parts of Asia to New York during the mid-19th century. In 1853, a group of Dutchmen founded the Empire State Coffee Company in what is now Rochester, New York. This company became one of the leading coffee companies in America and exported its beans all over the world.
Canandaigua was once a thriving small town in upstate New York. In the 1800s, it was known for its fertile farmland and rich wine production. However, over time, Canandaigua's economy went into decline and its population rapidly decreased. Today, the town is mostly inhabited by descendants of the original settlers from Scotland who founded the community in 1785. The oldest family still living in Canandaigua is that of Rankin and MacLaren who arrived in 1786. Today, Canandaigua is a vibrant community with an active business district, several restaurants and bars, as well as a variety of cultural events. Coffee was first ground into powder for use as a stimulant and diplomatic envoy by the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. In 1795, an Italian traveler, Vespucci, discovered coffee growing in Ethiopia and brought back some of the first seeds to Italy. The Ethiopian Emperor Kaldi soon ordered hisquirers to purchase all available land in order to cultivate this new bean variety. By 1824, coffee beans had spread throughout most of Europe and North America. Coffee began being exported to other parts of the world in large quantities during the 1800s. The Dutch grew the best beans while British traders sold coffee to countries like China and India. Coffee became popular among European nobility as it was a source of revenue during this time period. However, due to its addictive quality, Coffee never enjoyed widespread popularity outside of certain regions until well into the 20th century. In 1971, caffeine was removed from prohibition-era regulations that allowed for more than two ounces per person per day (the current limit). This led to increased demand for pureed coffee products which then drove down prices for consumers worldwide (although some high-quality coffees still fetch quite high prices). Since then, many different types of roasted beans have become popular including Arabica (which is typically darker), Robusta (which is stronger), Unroasted Arabica/Robusta blend (which is lighter), First World / premium blend (containing more caffeine), Guatemalan Bolivian Acehño/Guatemalan Sumatra Sinabon Blend (containing both dark and light roastings), Colombian Andes Ecuadorian Piquete/Andean Colombian Antigua & Barbuda Blends etc., with continued innovation across various roasting styles resulting in even higher quality outcomes within each typeof bean!

Canandaigua is a small town in upstate New York, near the village of Glens Falls. It was settled in 1788 by Loyalists from Ulster County, Ireland, who had fled during the Irish Rebellion of 1803. The town became a part of Albany County in 1830. In 1857, Canandaigua was renamed after Niagara Falls. The townsite at Canandaigua Falls was first patented on October 15, 1788 by Nicholas Herkimer and his brother-in-law John Barker. They named it for the then thriving community of Catania (now Orchard Park) in Orange County, New York; their home base at that time. Colonel George Washington led an army through the area during the American Revolutionary War and came to know the falls well; he had been visiting Catania frequently since his victory over British General Howe at Saratoga Springs on July 26, 1777. In 1790 following Herkimer's death and Barker's purchase of adjoining land from him, settlers began to arrive including David Brewster (1748-1811), Noah Webster (1755-1836), Elijah Woodbury (1759-1832), Christoffel Kieft (1684-1772), Samuel Morse (1812-1849), Daniel Boorstin (1800-1882) and others. By 1800 about 150 people lived here with 10 or 12 farms scattered around what is now downtown Canandaigua. At its peak in 1820 there were 300 people living here with 60 or 70 farms grouped into six wards: North Ward (), East Ward (), South Ward (), WestWard () and Middle Ward (). The population decreased slowly until 1840 when it reached 350 with about 80 farms still intact but most dispersed throughout Fulton County NY east of Lake Ontario). Most residents here were Presbyterians who erected a Presbyterian church early in their settlement which remains standing today - known as Zion Episcopal Church - built on a hill overlooking downtown Canandaigua now used as parking lot for local businesses such as Boutique Bazaar & Clothing Store located upstairs from current structure dating back to 1860s when building lots along Main Street were sold off one by one making way for later commercial structures like this one filling up once again given recent shopping center redevelopment plans adjacent to same lot currently under construction opposite exterior facade not visible from street level yet looking quite similar inside despite various changes over years see below photo accompanying this report original building frontage can be seen behind newer development rear facade has been completely obscured since redevelopment completed nearly 20 years ago formerly facing Main Street widthwise only slightly reduced due side street expansion also apparently involved NOTE: All exterior photos © 2016 by author unless otherwise noted
Canandaigua was a small town in upstate New York until the late 19th century. It was located on the east bank of Canandaigua River, about two miles south of present-day Syracuse. The town was founded by Puritans in 1682 and became a part of new Albany County in 1784. The town had no school until 1814, when it opened under the name "Newburgh." In 1825, the Town Board changed its name to Canandaigua and remained that way until 1957 when it changed back to its original name.
