By 1865, Canandaigua had a population of about 100 people and 10 businesses. In 1883, the Towne family donated land to build a gunsmith shop in what is now known as the Towne Gun Shop Building. In 1907, the town’s post office was moved from the old armory to the new building next door in order to improve communication between residents and government officials. In 1912, a bank opened in Canandaigua and soon began to offer banking services to residents. From 1916 until 1948, canadaIGUA had its own school district which included both public schools (grades one through five) as well as private academies for boys (grades six through twelve). Canandaigua, New York is a small town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Canandaigua was David Smith in 1795. The town originally consisted of only a few houses and a millstream. In 1821 it became a village under the name of Canandaigua. In 1825 it became an incorporated town with a population of 2,000 people. The town's first school was built in 1828 and its first post office in 1830. Canandaigua's economy was based on agriculture until the early 20th century when manufacturing began to grow there as well. In 1955, Canandaigua became one of five townships within the new City of Rochester; however its status changed again when the city annexed all but two of the remaining villages and townships within its boundaries in 1962-1963 (the other being Webster). As part of this process, some old buildings were razed to make way for new businesses and housing developments while others were preserved as cultural heritage sites including the old courthouse which still serves as an administrative building for Monroe County Courthouse Services Corporation. Today, Canandaigua is home to many different types of businesses including restaurants and retail stores as well as government agencies such as county government departments and social welfare organizations. Some original buildings still stand such as Old Courts House which once served as executive headquarters for Monroe County until 1984 when it moved into newer quarters inside what is now CenturyLink Park across from Central Park South; also surviving are significant portions of Beaver Street which ran through downtown until 1954 when it was replaced by State Route 9W after businessman John Wetherbee donated land to that effect; finally can be found remains from several cemeteries dating back to colonial times including Mount Hope Cemetery where early Americans buried their dead along with representatives from Canada who died during their visit before returning home
