Canandaigua is a small town in central New York, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mohawk Valley region. The name Canandaigua comes from the word "canaanahga" meaning "place where there is plenty of water." The first settler in Canandaigua was Nicholas de Champlain and his family, who began to live in what is now Canandaigua in 1624. In 1797, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Mills here after purchasing land from the state of New York for $1,000. Canandaigua became a village on October 25, 1825 when it voted to become a town under the Townshend Plan of 1826. On December 12, 1830, it passed an ordinance creating schools and setting up government services such as elections and taxes. The Erie Canal crossed through Canandaigua on its way to Buffalo and was used by settlers as well as travelers trying to get to Syracuse or Rochester downriver. A post office was established at Canandaigua on May 14th, 1836; however only six months later it was discontinued because there wasn't enough mail available to serve everyone in town. On July 2nd 1861 during the American Civil War Battle of Saratoga Springs over two miles away (3 km), Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate Division—under General Robert Ewell—to cross over Lewisville Creek into Canadian County near present day Middleburgh just east of town Limits Road which led directly into Indian Territory then within Indian Territory proper but both generals knew that their forces were too scattered and vulnerable so they decided instead to retreat back across Lewisville Creek with their supplies before dark without engaging any local Native Americans –– this event would come to be known as “the withdrawal” This strategic blunder cost them heavy casualties including 8 officers & men killed & 19 wounded making it one of history’s most costly engagements Third Brigade commanded by Captain James Hickey lost 3 officers (2 majors) & 31 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded making him one of America’s leading gallant commanders during the war A new post office was opened at Canandaigua on November 15th1863 by Alfred Mifflin Postmaster General Ulysses S Grant with George Washington Carver as First Mail Carrier After Vandalia burned down March 1862 he rebuilt her using Federal funds which made her one of America’s first true steamboats When Congress authorized President Abraham Lincoln To build The Transcontinental Railroad Through Central New York He chose Elkhorn Tavern located just southwest corner Of limits road And west Of current limits Road As Its terminus Then Couldnt find another place To put The tracks So He Built A Station Here Now Named Greenport For His Railroad Company Called The Northern Pacific Railroad But Eventually Just renamed Chicago Bridge Over Susquehanna River

Canandaigua, New York is a small town located in Upstate New York. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. Canandaigua is part of the Erie County, New York metropolitan area. It is bordered by the towns of Seneca Falls to the south and west, Canton to the north, and Rome to the east. The main highway running through Canandaigua is Route 9W which links it with Seneca Falls and Rome. The first Europeans to visit what is now Canandaigua were French traders in 1614. They named the place "Canton" after their captain who discovered it on his voyage from France to Albany. In 1785, Revolutionary War veteran John Armstrong erected a fort here and began trading with Native Americans for goods such as furs and captives. After the war ended in 1783, he sold his land here to George Washington for $10,000 dollars. The townspeople renamed it "Canandaigua" in honor of General Washington's headquarters during his campaign against British forces at Saratoga Springs in 1777-1778. In 1811, Canandaigua became one of five communities that formed Monroe County when Ontario County was split into two parts along ethnic lines during the American Revolution. As a result of this change in county government, most industry in Canandaigua migrated out of its downtown core towards Monroe County's more prosperous townships until all but one major industry – agriculture – withdrew from Monroe County altogether by 1920 due mainly to social changes brought about by World War II (see also: Community Disintegration). During World War II an important munitions plant was built near present-day Rochester Road (now Main Street) which together produced some 1 million rounds of ammunition for United States military campaigns throughout Europe and Asia; even today there are remnants of this plant scattered around town center areas where extensive brick engineering has been carried out over many years without leaving any detectable relics behind! After 1945 most residents returned home to rebuild their lives following World War II while some took advantage of post-war opportunities such as teaching or working at local businesses; however two notable exceptions were two young men who decided they wanted to start their own company - one founded a plastics company while another started manufacturing radios/TVs - both men still live within walking distance today! As recently as 1960 only 3% of all households had electric lights while almost half possessed no plumbing facilities whatsoever; today nearly everyone has access either directly or indirectly via public sewerage systems! By 1990 only 7% percent Of All Households Had Paper towels While almost Half Possessed No Plumbing Facilities!!!!! These days much progress has been made towards creating quality affordable housing including programs like “Homes For Everyone” which provide free rent/ utilities & homeownership assistance for lowincome families since 2000!!
Canandaigua was established by the Dutch in 1624 as a trading post on the Niagara River. It became a British naval base in 1701, and then an American military post during the Revolutionary War. The town was abandoned after the war, but it resumed growth in the late 19th century as a result of its strategic location at the mouth of the Canandaigua Creek. In 1907, Canandaigua became a city and has remained that way ever since.
