The Canandaigua Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and emergency services along the New York-Pennsylvania border since 1916. The agency was founded as the Harbor Defense Patrol, and its first station was in Canandaigua, New York. The present coast guard station is located in downtown Canandaigua, on Pier 5. In 1942, the Coast Guard began providing transportation to coastal towns in central New York State during World War II. In 1954, the Coast Guard opened a shop at Pier 9 in downtown Canandaigua to sell supplies for the local police department. In 1978, the present canoe pier became available for use by the Coast Guard when it purchased land from the town of Peekskill. Today, the Coast Guard provides assistance to local residents with a variety of missions including law enforcement, Search and Rescue operations, education programs and public safety initiatives.

Canandaigua, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a post office on April 12, 1821, and was named for Colonel Jameson Canandaigua, an American Revolutionary War veteran and delegate from Niagara County to the General Court in 1787. The first school in Canandaigua was built in 1839. Canandaigua has been home to a number of notable residents over the years, including Congressman John Fenton (R-NY), Assemblyman George Pataki (R-NY), and writer Eudora Welty. In 2002, Canandaigua became one of only two communities in upstate New York to receive an award from the National Institute on Aging for its commitment to healthy aging practices. Canandaigua, New York is a town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 1,075 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Canandaigua was named after the Huron word cana meaning "place where salmon swim." The first settler in what is now Canandaigua was Nicholas de Carondelet, who arrived in 1614. In 1785, James Ketchum founded the village of Canandaigua on the east side of Cayuga Lake to serve as a post office and trading center for fur traders traveling between Canada and New York City. The village quickly grew into a small town with a variety of shops and services available for its residents. In 1827, Ketchum donated land to form the Town of Canandaiguas which later became an incorporated community under the name of Canandaigua. From 1827 until 1959, Canandaigua was located within Unadilla Creek Township; from 1959 until it became an independent city under its own governance, it continued to be located within Lewis County. The townships that comprise Lewis County were created on December 14th, 1784 by Congress via an act known as "An Act Concerning the Purchase of Lands by John Tryon". On January 1st (the day after President George Washington's inauguration), 1800 all but Unadilla Creek Township separated from Lewis County and merged into Ontario County; Unadilla Creek Township remained within Lewis County until it too seceded on June 12th 1861 to become Niagara Falls Borough (later renamed Niagara Falls). As part of this change in government structure there also occurred a dramatic increase in population density as more people moved into unincorporated areas near central Buffalo; this led to the founding of several new cities throughout Erie and Niagara Counties: Canandaiguanaghtown (now Sayreville), Dunkirk/Corning/Aurora Heights/Pleasantville/Waterford Hills (all now part of Rochester), Romeoville (now North Aurora), Lewiston/Farmington Hills (now Alfred) and finally Milanville (now Tonawanda). These new communities were built primarily around heavy manufacturing or agricultural pursuits but did not experience significant growth until after World War II when suburbanization began making area municipalities larger than their rural counterparts. By 1990 only Lewiston-Farmington Hills had retained any vestige of rural character while all other municipalities had either been completely replaced by their newer counterpart or experienced rapid transformation into different types of townships without any connection whatsoever to their original villages or villages' retainers: Dodge City-Amherst Park–Dunkirktown–Canton–Albany Junction–Northeastern Clintonshire Township–Southern Clintonshire Township—Allentown Heights—Newburgh Heights—Canandia
Canandaigua was first settled in 1768 by the Susquehanna people. The village became a stop on the Erie Canal and later a center of industry in Canandaigua County. In 1832, the village was renamed Canandaigua after John Quincy Adams, then the U.S. Ambassador to France. The town was incorporated in 1866 and quickly developed into a commercial center with factories, warehouses, and stores. Canandaigua is home to three universities: SUNY Cortland, SUNY Oswego, and Binghamton University.
