It became an incorporated Village in 1853. Canandaigua was called "Hagerman's Corntown" because its founder, Jacob Hagerman, ran a gristmill there from 1760 to 1765. In 1827, Canandaigua became part of the new Town of Oswego and retains its original name today. The village that grew up around this post came to be known as "Hagerman's Corntown". Onondaga Chief Hagerman ran what is now known as one of New York's earliest grain mills dating back to 1760. By 1800, agricultural production had become such an important part of local economy that Hagerman sold his mill to Adam Smith for $1,500 cash. With continued growth in agriculture and industry over ensuing centuries, Canandaigua experienced steady population growth until it reached its peak during World War II when it reached over 100 residents. However, since then population decline has occurred due to various reasons including loss of jobs in surrounding communities and gentrification within Canandaigua itself which has led to many people moving out into other parts of Upstate New York while also reducing available housing stock within the town limits. Today, although still experiencing some minor population growth (due primarily to recent arrivals coming for work or college), most residents live within walking distance of their homes or are able to ride their bikes or cars directly to their workplaces located just outside city limits – making it easy for everyone living hereto enjoy all that our community has to offer!
