The first documented reference to coffee being brewed in Buffalo is from 1824, when a ship called the “Calia” brought beans from Europe. One of the earliest businesses that sold coffee in Buffalo was John’s Coffee House on East Erie Street. This business was started by John Fenton and his wife Eliza Fenton. John’s Coffee House served as a meeting place for local merchants and politicians. In 1847, John Fenton donated his business to the city of Buffalo. The first Starbucks opened its doors in 1978 in downtown Buffalo! Buffalo has been home to several notable roasters over the years including Peet's Coffee Company (founded 1892), Dutch Bros./Brine & Kings (1905-present), ABC Coffee Roasters (1987-2010), Blue Bottle Coffee Co., Inc.(2005-present), Flying Nun Brewery(2007-present), Four Barrel Brewing Company(2006-present) and Local 814 Brewing(2015). The first coffee shop in Buffalo, New York was opened in 1825 by Nicholas K. Doherty and his brother John Doherty. The brothers were the first to import coffee from Holland. In 1865, George Breslin founded the Buffalo Coffee Company, which became one of the largest coffee companies in the United States. In 1903, Breslin's son Samuel founded the Empire Coffee Company. The company continued to grow until it merged with Roebuck & Co., Inc. in 1964. That company became known as Roebuck Associates, Incorporated (RAI). In 1975, RAI purchased the assets of Dutch-owned GASCO Coffee Corporation and changed its name to GASCO Breweries, Incorporated (GBI). In 1986, GBI purchased Rochester Brewing Company from PepsiCo and changed its name to Rochester Brewing Company USA (Rochester) Ltd. In 1997, GBI acquired Allentown Brewing Company from Great Lakes Brewery LLC and changed its name to Allentown Brewery USA (Allentown) Ltd. In 2002, GBI acquired Bethlehem Steel Corporation's brewing operations and changed its name to Bethlehem Steel CorporationBreweriesUSA (Bethlehem) Limited Partnership (BSC). BSC renamed itself BJ's Wholesale Grocery Holdings Inc.(BJHL) on October 1st 2009 effective October 1st 2008 when BJ's parent company Kroger announced their intent to divest themselves of all US grocery stores including BJ's locations across America not controlled by Kroger plc through a stock buyback program that would purchase an initial $2 billion worth of common shares out of those stores over a period of 10 years starting July 1st 2020
Buffalo is a city in New York State, United States. The population was 842,815 at the 2010 census. Buffalo is the third-most populous city in Erie County and the most populous municipality in Niagara County. It straddles Lake Ontario on its eastern edge and Curlew Hill on its western edge. The first European settlement in what is now Buffalo was by colonists from England who arrived around 1624. During the Cold War era, Buffalo played a key role as a crossroads for traffic between East Coast cities like New York City and West Coast cities such as San Francisco; it also became known for its contributions to research into nuclear weapons development. Coffee was also known to be drunk by the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians. In some instances, it was even considered a sacrament. Coffee became popular throughout the world after the Dutch discovered Java in 1613 and began importing beans from that region. This led to the development of various Arabic-speaking countries around the world with their own forms of espresso based on different bean types employed in Europe at this time (such as Sumatra). In 1847, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a machine that could make small batches of high-quality coffee without any water or milk being used. This allowed for a wider variety of flavors and stronger coffees than ever before. It wasn’t until shortly thereafter that Wired magazine published an article discussing how Conte’s machines could actually produce “the worst cup of coffee you will ever drink” due to their use of pre-ground beans which resulted in a more bitter flavor profile than desired (according to some). However, despite these negative experiences, Conte’s machines continued to be successful enough for him to continue making them well into the 21st century. In 1847, buffalo meat became available for export from Buffalo. This led to a boom in business for the town's merchants.Buffalo also became known for its cheese industry. After World War II, businesses closed down in downtown Buffalo due to economic decline. However, developers have since revived downtown by creating new businesses and projects such as art galleries and restaurants.
