In 1824, American Colonel Augustus Bancroft founded what became known as "The City" or "Belfast". In 1827, John Davenport made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase land at Buffalo Bayou for a new town he called Davenportville; however, this failed because no one wanted to move to what was then much smaller than Detroit, Michigan due to its lack of water access. A group led by Nathan Bedford Forrest bought 3 miles (5 km) east of present day Buffalo along with other properties around Lake Erie for $2 per acre (0·9 ha). The town began to grow rapidly after they got their hands on the land; within ten years it had reached 1,000 residents! By 1840, many people living in Fort Wayne had decided they wanted something more than just a small outpost near Lake Erie; they formed a new town named after them – Fort Wayne – which grew rapidly until it had 2,500 residents by 1850! The growth of Fort Wayne allowed for more development west of Waterford Avenue including today's downtown area where much of the University at Buffalo lies

The citys namesake is the Buffalo Soldier who fought in the American Revolution and received an honorary discharge from Congress. The first permanent settler in what would become Buffalo was Nicholas McGraw. He arrived on July 16, 1777 and named his new land "Wyoming." Two years later, he sold his interest in Wyoming to developer John Jacob Astor for $10,000. Astor founded the City of Buffalo on April 27, 1779 as a trading post between Philadelphia and Albany. In 1814, after pressure from General Anthony Wayne's campaign against Native Americans led by Captain George Armstrong Custer (the famous general who lost at Little Big Horn), Buffalo Mayor James Fenton laid down arms and surrendered to Custer's forces under the terms of Treaty No. 6 of 1814 which ceded all Indian territory west of Niagara Falls to America without compensation or warning to any tribe involved. This event is generally considered to be one of the most important moments in Buffalos history because it helped break open trade with these groups and allowed for better interactions with Native Americans that would lead to friendly settlements such as Detroit across the river in Canada some time later
