Buffalo is the county seat of Erie County and home to the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL). The first Europeans to visit what is now Buffalo were French traders and missionaries who followed Jacques Marquette in 1795. In 1814, after Perry's expedition discovered Michigan Territory, the United States Congress created Erie County from parts of Ontario and Niagara Counties. The land for what is now Buffalo was part of this new county. The town of Onondaga was incorporated in 1824. In 1827, a group of investors led by Andrew Jackson founded the Western Union Telegraph Company in Onondaga Township on Niagara River below today's downtown area. This company became one of the largest wire service companies in America and played an important role in developing both Buffalo and its surrounding communities into major metropolitan areas during the Progressive Era (1890-1920). In 1898, local businessmen organized a campaign to rename their city "Buffalo" after then-President William McKinley's hometowns Cincinnati and Cleveland. The name change never came about because it conflicted with nearby Rochester's "Rochester Institute of Technology." The first professional football team to play in what is now Buffalo was the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (now known as the Bills) on October 6th 1909 under head coach George Allen.
