The Binghamton National Guard was organized on February 16, 1855. The first unit to be organized was the 2nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment was disbanded in 1861 due to disbanding orders from President Abraham Lincoln. The 1st and 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiments were reorganized on October 15, 1861 as the 4th and 5th New York Volunteer InfantryRegiments respectively. On March 8, 1874 the battalion became part of the 6th Regiment of Artillery when it was organized at Binghamton with Companies A, B, C and D being redesignated Company I-A, Company II-B, Company III-C and Company IV-D. On November 10, 1898 a detachment of Battery E became attached to Battalion F when it was reorganized at Binghamton with Companies G and H becoming redesignated companies I-G and H-I respectively. On January 17, 1907 a detachment of Artillery become attached to Battalion D when it reorganized at Binghamton with Companies K and L becoming redesignated companies I-K and L-1 respectively. On December 9, 1916 a detachment of Machine Gun Corps becomes attached to Battalion A when it reorganized at Binghamton with Companies M (now known as Headquarters Battery), N (now known as Weapons Platoon) and P (now known as Provost Marshal's Platoon) becoming company headquarters while also detached from battalion for duty in France during World War I In 1920 the detachment became part of Headquarters Battery J (later renamed Headquarters Squadron J/2) which then became an artillery squadron within First Brigade Combat Team 1st Artillery Division based out of Fort Drum inoad Empire State Plaza in Albany
Binghamton, New York is a city in upstate New York on the Mohawk River. The population was 20,311 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Monroe County. Binghamton has been called "the education capital of America" and home to many colleges and universities. The area that now makes up Binghamton was inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Piscataway people before Europeans arrived in 1624. In 1784, land east of present-day Binghamton was claimed by John Armstrong for Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris following their victory over France in the Seven Years' War. A town began to form on this land – first named Albany – but it was not until 1814 when a new courthouse was built and renamed after George Washington that Binghamton became an official city. The history of Binghamton goes back even further than this; its name comes from William Bradford’s 1597 poem “Bingleyon Hill” which means “a hillock or gentle rise lying between two low hills”. One theory suggests that “binghamtowne” derived from Binbrook meaning both a small stream running through a wooded area and also an informal term for someone who frequented such a stream. At some point during its history, binbrook probably came to designate any open space near where today's downtown stands – likely thanks to its close proximity to mills around the turn of the 19th century. Over time, various other names were attached to what would become Binghamton: Nordenburgh (now North Aurora), Clinton (now Capital District), Easton (now Easton Heights), Waterloo (now Webster), Union (later Utica) and finally Monroeville after President James K. Polk made it his inaugural capital in 1881 due to concerns about potential immigrants settling near Buffalo, New York City and Hartford, Connecticut! Even after becoming an official city, however, much progress wasn't made in terms of infrastructure development until well into the 20th century because funding was usually sourced from outside sources - primarily merchant ships headed for Cleveland or Buffalo instead! This changed with prohibition soon afterwards making goods available only at state-sanctioned stores which helped spur significant economic development within what would later become known as the Genesee County communities west of I-8W! In 1970–71 alone, BingHAMTON saw more than $2 billion worth of business transactions take place within its borders – proof enough that there's no doubt that our city is one fullof commerce & culture!
