Binghamton is a small town in New York State, United States. The population was 7,828 at the 2010 census. Binghamton was founded in 1785 by Captain James P. Bingham and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge Bingham as a trading post on the Mohawk River. In 1814, it became a village and in 1825 it became a town. It is named after General John Jacob Astor, who donated land to the town for its development. The first school in Binghamton was built in 1785. The first post office opened in 1814 and the first store closed in 1865. The only doctor practicing Medicine at that time was Drs John Mead and Samuel Hoggatt, both of whom died within one year of each other due to tuberculosis. In 1827, Binghamton had its own railroad station which remains structurally active today as the Amtrak station on Main Street. In 1862, when New York State gained its present boundaries including part of Ontario County west of Buffalo, Binghamton lost most of its territory but still retained its status as an unincorporated community with a government led by elected officials known as "boards." On July 1st 1870 voters ratified an amendment to the Town Charter giving them full municipal autonomy under the new system; this change effectively ended many Board functions and created more democratic procedures for governing Binghamton's affairs including representation on regional councils (now called "amendments"), elections through ranked voting systems (now known as " districting"), and binding arbitration of disagreements between city council members and village/town board members over issues such as fire regulation or zoning changes
Binghamton was founded by the Wyandots in 1777. The city became a Village in 1854, and an incorporated municipality in 1876. It was destroyed by fire on July 14, 1892, and rebuilt with assistance from the United States government. In 1908, Binghamton lost its status as a village and became an unincorporated community again. The city was re-established as a municipality on November 3, 1949.
