Binghamton is a city in New York state, United States. It is the county seat of Binghamton County and the fifth-largest city in New York after New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers, and Syracuse. The population was 185,895 at the 2010 census. Binghamton's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The first permanent settler in what would become Binghamton was John Greenough who arrived in 1788. He founded Greenough's Mills with his family from Massachusetts. In 1802, James Wright Wyeth established a cotton gin near what is now Elmira College; this set the stage for the town's economic development. By 1830, Binghamton had a small but thriving commercial sector that employed over 1,000 people. In 1832–34 Mayor Elijah Bogue directed construction of the Erie Canal which connected Albany to Buffalo viaway; this opened up new markets for goods and created new opportunities for businesses in Binghamton. The canal also helped to spur settlement westward along Route 9W which became known as "the canalside". This area of town developed into one of its most prosperous areas during its early years due to its strong trade winds and access to natural resources such as coal and lumber. During World War II many industries closed down due to wartime production restrictions but Binghamton emerged as an important regional center for munitions production leading up to the war when hundreds of jobs were created at two local factories that manufactured artillery shells and other munitions needed by Allied forces fighting Nazi Germany. After the war ended there were significant layoffs throughout most industrial sectors including those related to munitions production although many jobs did reopen relatively quickly once again thanks to technological advances occurring during post-war America’s “Epoch of Prosperity”). However some key engineering firms remained closed until they reopened following divestitures by various government agencies responsible for defense spending during the late 1960s through early 1970s (euphemistically called peacetime restructuring – see Defense Department consolidations below). These include Alcoa aluminum smelters (closed 1964), Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines (closed 1967), General Electric Corporation Electrical Products Division (closed 1971), Bethlehem Steel Company Shipbuilding Incorporated (closed 1975) – all located within a few blocks of each other on route 9W just outside downtown BingHAMTON! 1) The closure of GEPCO’s shipyards adjacent downtown led directly to job losses due both closures at Alcoa Aluminum smelters as well as Bethlehem Steel plant shipbuilding operations – these Job Losses totaled nearly 2% of GMEPCO’s annual sales prior to 1984!2) Another key factor resulting from cessation or reduction of military/industrial firearm manufacturing conducted within blocks surrounding downtown was concurrent garment Manufacturing activity expanding outwards into newly opened suburban centers elsewhere in Upstate NY largely because Factory closings resulted in increased demand across western NY regions whereupon rising prices generated by overall population growth spurred further expansion especially outside major cities/regions where labor costs are relatively lower than around larger metropolitan areas
