The destroyed buildings remain a reminder of that wartime incident. The city has been occupied by European Americans since its founding. Its first white residents were mostly mechanics and farmers who came to build homes around 1784. They were followed by Germans in 1815 and Irish immigrants in 1827; as these groups grew more numerous, they began electing their own officials and buying landowning privileges from native speakers. By 1800, most people living within the present-day boundaries of Binghamton were English or Americanized Europeans (and some Native Americans). In 1865, when New York State joined the United States as a new nation, Binghamton became part of New York City; however, it retains its position as the county seat for Chemung County because that is where government operations are located (the court system is also located there).
