Beacon is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Binghamton–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beacon is located on the southern border of Chenango County and on the north side of Niagara River. The first permanent settler in what would become Beacon was Nicholas J. Fenton in 1807. He platted what is now Beacon village and named it after his home country, England (then Great Britain). The following year, he sold land to John Prentice for $3 per acre. In 1809, Paul Smith bought 2/3 of Fenton's interest in the village for $10 per acre. In 1812-15, Nathaniel Prescott laid out and developed one half of Beacon into a town square with a schoolhouse and six other buildings including churches and stores. By 1816-17,the town had a population of fiftyfive people and four dwellings: twenty-six white men and four free black men who worked as slaves on farms within five miles of the center of town; ten white women; three black women; one man servant; two female servants; one dog attending to all needs viz., feeding him water and pulling his cart around ; two firemen employed by Mr. Prescott during this time period In 1830-34 Michael Curtin improved an old road between Romellsville (now Auburn)and Buffalo (now West Seneca), developing what became known as "Curtin's Road". On July 12th 1830 he laid out a new township from parts of Romellsville eastward to Cambria Heights roadswidening it to sixteen rods by eight rods thence Sixty rods Westerly along said routes formed part thereof until said limits should be again extended Northeast by Eight Rods thence due Southwesterly along said lines forming another Township called Clinton which was detached from that hereinbefore mentioned . . . He also surveyed lots for gristsmills beginning about milepost 665 west from where present day Erie Boulevard exits State Highway 13 across from Rochester Community College

Beacon is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 6,813 at the 2010 census. Beacon is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beacon was platted in 1795 by General James Clinton and named for Captain George Beal of HMS "Prometheus" who had been killed during the American Revolutionary War. It became a town in 1821 and a village in 1834. The name 'Beacon' derives from an early settler's observation that "a clear sky ever portends fair weather". The first school in Beacon was built on land donated by John Brownell around 1800. The first teacher, locally called Bobbin, taught school for one day each week until 1807 when another local man, Master Charles Huntley, began to teach classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1830 until he died in 1840. In 1827-28 there were only three residents living in what is now Beacon; John Paine (the first postmaster), William Herrick (a justice of the peace) and Abraham Smith (builder of what is now the Post Office). Smith bought two acres (0.8 km²) of east side property which still forms most of modern-day Beacon village center In 1865 an act passed by the New York State Legislature provided for a public library system within each county seat with books being loaned to citizens free of charge upon request In 1870 Alfred Silliman endowed a fund which supported technical education for boys at SUNY Polytechnic Institute In 1922 Mechanicsburg Academy merged with Empire Normal School to form Empire Technical College which eventually became SUNY Buffalo . In 1935 Beacon trustees approved plans to establish an agricultural college adjacent to Empire Technical College but this never came to fruition before it too merged with Empire Normal School to become SUNY Buffalo
Beacon was chartered on December 4, 1795 by General John Sullivan as a town in the Western Reserve. The town lies on the east bank of the Niagara River, about northeast of Rochester and northwest of Buffalo. It was named for Nicholas-Jacques Beaubien, a French general who fought in North America during the American Revolutionary War. The first settler at Beacon was Nicholas-Jacques Beaubien, who arrived in 1795. He built a small log cabin near where he later founded Beacon Hill. In 1802, Samuel Morse set up his family business here and also laid out the village's present location. In 1815, troops under Commodore Matthew Cuyler burned down the old Fort George on Beacon Hill after challenging British control over New York City during the War of 1812. The United States acquired New York from Great Britain through an act of Congress known as the Treaty of Paris. On July 12, 1825, Mayor James Kieft granted land to Nathaniel Pinkney to create what is now downtown Buffalo. On October 20, 1828, Mayor Kieft issued a proclamation creating three wards: First Ward (northwest corner of Erie and Main), Second Ward (southwest corner of Erie and State Street), Third Ward (east side of State Street). In 1830–31st elections held pursuant to Section 9(a) of the Municipal Corporations Law twenty-one members were elected to city councils with two seats per ward; one seat went to each city councilor if no individual received more than fifty percent (50%)of total votes cast for all offices open for election including those not bearing any municipal office; one seat was vacated every year by an individual unseated from office or disqualified because he had been guilty either directly or indirectly of bribery or corruption in connection with any matter within his jurisdiction as mayor or member thereof; except that no person voted twice consecutively for president without having deposited V[ouge]ture opposite such office). As boroughs gradually became municipalities throughout New York state in 1915–16 there were several changes: One change which affected Beacon was that it became part Of Buffalo while Rochester retained its separate government until 1931 when it too became part Of Buffalo
