Beacon is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,649 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the beacon that once stood atop a hill overlooking the town. Beacon is one of five towns in Ulster County that are part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beacon began as an agricultural community on the east side of Seneca Lake and grew slowly until 1857 when it became an independent town. In 1872, it merged with Syracuse to form Syracuse-Beacon-Tyre. In 1916, the name change to Beacon because of its location in central New York City on the main line between Buffalo and Niagara Falls; thus making it one of only two towns in New York State with both Albany (the capital) and Niagara Falls within their boundaries. The first store opened in what is now downtown Beacon on State Street in 1857. Two years later, George Washington Smith opened his first grocery store there which remain open today as One Stop Grocery Incorporated (). A post office called Seneca Lake was established at this location on July 12, 1860, and remained in operation until February 15, 1899. The first settler to arrive in what is now Beacon was John Hecker who arrived by boat from Holland on October 14th, 1792. He built a cabin near present day Main Street and counted among his few possessions three Indian scalps taken from some Antigonish natives who had been captured during British raids into Canada along the Susquehanna River valley several days earlier.. In 1872 when pressure mounted for western expansion through Central New York following President Ulysses S Grant’s Kansas–Nebraska Act (), Ezra Cornell came up with a plan to connect Buffalo with Syracuse by creating a road running northwest from Utica via Tioga Junction then southeast past Auburn to reach Buffalo just before the falls would be reached. This road would have cut throughpresent daySeneca Lakeandbeaconwouldhavebecomeoneofthetownsalongitslength.(The original route has since been changed). Beacons early successes lay not so much in its natural resources but rather its strategic location being situated midway along Route 9W between modern day Utica and Niagara Falls giving easy access both ways while still providing privacy for farmers leading upriver towards canals/rivers essential for commerce downriver as well as protecting frontier Towns against possible Native American raiders such as those led by Tecumseh.( For more information see: "The History of Beacon NY" ). Manhattan Transfer Company served local passengers transferring between Fulton Ferry Terminal & IRT White Plains Line stations until 1975 when all passenger service ended due to budget cuts by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (). Today One Stop Grocery still operates commercially using ancillary services such as UberEATS . One important development that took place during these early years was racial integration courtesy of Reverend Dr Samuel Dennett () who settled near the intersection of Main & Genesee Streets about 1870 AD). By 1890 most residents had either white or black families living alongside them however there were still occasional incidents which caused tension between races even though everyone tried hard not to show it .)
