The Coast Guard has been operating in New York City since 1824. The first coast guard station was established at Broadwalk Point on the lower East Side, and the first organized service was called the Volunteer Association for Protection of Harbors and Inland Waters. In 1847, a new barracks was erected on Governors Island to accommodate the growing number of coast guard personnel. The following year, a second coast guard station was opened at Battery Park. In 1860, the first shipboard firefighting unit arrived in New York Harbor when the steamboat "Cleveland" brought five volunteer firefighters from Maine. The unit served until 1865, when it was replaced by an engine-driven brigade manned by sailors from Brooklyn. From 1861 to 1877, there were only two coastguard stations in New York City - one on Governors Island and one at Battery Park - due to budgetary limitations. However, this changed with the establishment of three more stations - one each at Rockaway Beach (1875), Sunset Hill (1876) and White Sands Bay (1877). During World War I, Coast Guard personnel played an important role in providing protection against riots and sabotage along America's coasts. They also contributed to wartime efforts through their participation in both military operations and coastal defense patrols. After World War II ended, many coast guard officers became professional police officers or worked as public safety officials within city governments throughout New York State and New Jersey

Beacon is a village located in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. Beacon is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded as a log cabin by Captain David Thompson in 1788, Beacon became one of the most important settlements on the Mohawk River Valley when it was founded by Loyalist refugees from British rule in 1777. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General John Upward's forces burned down much of Beacon following his victory over American forces at Battle of Northumberland Heights. The settlement continued to be rebuilt and grew rapidly after its reconstruction effort was funded by Senator George Clinton (D-NY) and local farmers. By 1830, there were 2200 residents living in what is now downtown Beacon. During Prohibition days (1921-1927), many businesses around town were used for manufacturing or selling liquor without having to obtain a Liquor Authority license from the State Liquor Authority; this allowed these companies to continue operating even under prohibition laws which did not allow such activities with state property. These days only two remaining businesses still operate: One closed in 1984 and another closed in 2009 – both wereuphemistically called "pubs." The first post office opened at beacon on February 2nd, 1788 (the date recorded as “February First” on some early records). It served as an outpost until 1840 when it relocated to Albany because that city had become more populous and developed than double tenant Kingston). After sending supplies up river each way between Albany and Kingston through Canandaigua Lake during wartime shortages due to the warring states embargo against each other; Postmaster General Thomas Jefferson ordered that all supplies going into or coming out of New York should go through Albany instead so that trade could take place unimpeded between our two great cities! That same year saw construction begin on what would eventually become Beacon Hill Tower which served as both headquarters for government services for Chenango County until 1959 including county courthouse and jail (now known as Western New York University’s College at Buffalo Campus). Beacon is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name for Beacon was derived from the First Nation word "beni" meaning place of wooded hills or mountain peak. Beacon was settled by Loyalists from Canada in 1788 and named after King George III's daughter Princess Augusta of Hanover who resided there with her husband, Prince Frederick of Wales. In 1814, the village became a post office under the name Beechcroft on land given to it by John D'Arcy McGeehan. In 1828, the Erie Canal was completed and Beechcroft became an important shipping point because it had access to both the canal and Lake Erie. By 1840, however, trade declined as transportation costs increased. In 1845-46 Captain Samuel Morse opened a small furnishing store in what is now Beacon and began selling wireless telegraphy equipment which he installed in his home for use by his customers (now known as Morse Tower). The first school in Beacon was built on Meetinghouse Hill in 1847 but closed due to lack of students and teachers; it reopened under new management in 1850. A second school opened in 1861 but closed again due to lack of students and teachers; it reopened again under new management in 1863 when local farmers donated land for a public school district that would serve all villages within its boundaries including Beacon A third school opened at 6 Main Street (now called State Street) on December 12, 1865 pursuant to an act of the New York Legislature providing for educational opportunities for poor citizens living along state borders; this third school operated until May 24th 1870 when all three schools were combined into one large building across Main Street which still serves as beacon hall today On February 3rd 1898 Mayor James Whelan declared a state day (later renamed Memorial Day) dedicated to Colonel Augustus Bemis who served as military advisor during US Spanish American War efforts at Fort Niagara – present day Buffalo Niagara International Airport – assisted with munitions storage On October 15th 1954 local residents collected enough signatures to put forward incorporation into their own Village government although no vote took place until 1959 when village trustees unanimously approved incorporation based on plans submitted by then-mayor Tom Allyn On July 1st 1968 voters ratified referendum results setting forth requirements for proper governance including taxation rates etc., resulting in erection/adoption of Village Charter On November 9th 1972 Citizens raised money thru bake sales & car wash night to purchase fire extinguisher system from National Guard Armory located just outside town limits
