The national guard was first organized in New York in 1795. The unit was consist of militia soldiers from the counties of Albany, Batavia, and Westchester. The unit was disbanded in 1801. From 1804-1815, the state National Guard was organized under the command of Colonel John Paulding. After being disbanded for a period of time, the regiment was reorganized on November 3, 1816 as 2nd Battalion Albany Militia Corps with Captain Isaac Kuykendall as its captain general. It participated in the War of Independence and served until it dissolved on December 16th, 1817. In 1840-1841, there were two battalions formed by order of Governor De Witt Clinton which served under colonel Nathaniel Lyon until it disbanded on February 13th due to lack of funding. In 1861-1862 there were also two battalions formed by order of General George Buell which served under colonel James Shields until it disbanded on October 25th due to financial problems. On May 26th, 1862 an additional battalion (1st Battalion) was raised at Buffalo for service in the war against Rebel forces under Major General Ulysses S Grant who commanded the Army’s Northwestern Department during that season’s hostilities. Thereafter 1st Battalion Albany Militia Corp became part of 5th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry when that regiment came into existence on July 15th following Union victory at Antietam Heights over Confederate forces commanded by Lieutenant General Robert Ewell “ Buckner” Jackson and their Generals Richard Taylor and Joseph Ewingbotham respectively. On January 7TH 1865 1st Battalion Albany Militia Corp folded along with all other volunteer regiments serving within Union army after Sherman’s march through Georgia & Alabama crushing all remaining Confederate resistance

Batavia was a town in the Towns of Onondaga and Cayuga counties, New York, United States. It is located on the south bank of the Susquehanna River, east of Kingston and west of Buffalo. The name Batavia comes from Dutch Batavia (meaning "fortress"). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Batavia were Dutch traders who explored the area in 1624. They built a trading post at what is now called Watertown on the north bank of the Susquehanna River. The first permanent settler in what is now Batavia was Nicholas de Clute, who arrived with his family in 1639. De Clute's son, Cornelius de Clute, later became one of the most powerful men in colonial New Netherland. In 1647, he sold his share in the fort to Samuel Strode and moved his family there. Strode renamed it Fort Orange after his home province of Holland. In 1714, British forces attacked Fort Orange and destroyed it as part of an effort to capture Niagara Falls. The townspeople quickly rebuilt it and named it after their ally Great Britain – Englishbatavia for "the English settlement". In 1772, when New York state was admitted into Confederation as a new nation, Batavia became part of Erie County along with other towns within that county. During World War II, many people from Batavia served in military units based in nearby Kingston or Buffalo; some even formed their own unit known as 4-C Troops (4th Infantry Division).
