In 1824, Nicholas de laPorte built a sawmill on what is now Water Street just west of First Avenue. This mill provided jobs for many people in Batavia and it helped to expand the economy of the town. In 1827, John D'Angelo died and his sons took over business ownership of TheBatavian News and continued to publish it until 1901. Between 1830 and 1840, Reverend Samuel Morse imported Indian coffees from India and set up shop at 226 Broad Street which became known as Morse's Mills because of its connection to that business.) In 1847, William Halsey founded Jardin du Brasseur (later Bazaar) Coffee Company with help from Captain Nemeth who ran an agricultural store near by. Jardin du Brasseur became one of the leading importers of French-trained Arabica beans into America. By 1850, Jardin du Brasseur had become one of Batavia's most important businesses! In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited Batavia while he was campaigning for president; during his visit he stopped at Jardin duBrasseur where he enjoyed a cup of coffee from captain Nemeth before continuing on his campaign tour! Bazaar closed its doors for good in 1944 but reopened again as part of Starbucks years later!
Batavia (Orangumena: Pahamana) was a small village located in the town of Auburn, Onondaga County, New York, United States. It is now part of the city of Syracuse. The population was enumerated at $14,354 in 1821. The first European to visit what is now Batavia was Dutchman Hendrik Pauwels in 1624 and he named it "Auburn". He also noted that there were no trees or other plants like he had seen in Holland. In 1784, Pierre-Jacques Marquette visited Batavia and wrote about it in his journal as "a very poor village on the banks of a stream". In 1817, John Jacob Astor built a house on the site which became his home for years. In 1825, it burned down and Astor rebuilt it using logs from his old home. In 1827-28 Ezra Stiles explored the area around Batavia while working as an agent for the Erie Canal Company. He noted that there were few trees and many swampy areas where he could not walk without wetting his feet. In 1830-31 George Stephenson surveyed andbuiltthe canal through this area and named it after himself - Stephenson's Falls (). "Batavia", meaning "place where bread flourishes", refers to how well flour production flourished here due to excellent soils, rich water resources, sun exposure, lack of vegetation & storms; these factors allowed farmers to maintain their land over time despite unfavorable weather conditions

Batavia was a small village in Hamilton County, New York, United States. It was located on the east side of the Niagara River and about four miles (6 km) northeast of Buffalo. The population was 1,000 at the 2010 census. The present-day village of Batavia is founded by Germans from Westphalia in 1795, who named it after their home town in that country. They were driven out of their original homeland by religious persecution in that year. In 1802, the area around Batavia became part of the new state of New York when Erie County was created. By 1815, only a few hundred people remained in what had been once a thriving community with a couple thousand residents and several churches and schools. In 1824–25, construction began on what would become Batavia's first courthouse and jail. After Buffalo's defeat in the Battle of Bull Run during the American Civil War, many German immigrants came to Batavia to help rebuild its society and economy. Some also bought land there for themselves—the first such purchases made within reach of Native Americans living near Buffalo since those days before white settlement began.—Batavia started prospering as an agricultural center; but this prosperity did not last long because prices for goods kept rising while wages stagnated.—A major cause behind these high prices were transportation costs: wagon trains took weeks or even months to travel from west to east across open country.—In 1876–77 an express train service operated between Buffalo and Batavia; but this service stopped operations due to factors beyond our control.—By then however much had changed: railroads had brought cheap goods into town while jobs had disappeared away.; so businesses closed up shop altogether., leaving behind an abandoned village with no one working there except for occasional salvagers looking for anychance he might find something left over.—Many people also left because they could not afford landlords' assessments which ranged from $50 per acre (2 m²) up to $1,200 per acre (40 m²).—Some people simply moved away when they discovered other villages with larger populations closer by; others chose to leave because they could not bear living among all those Indians who still roamed free nearby.–Bataviians gradually assimilated into surrounding Indian communities through intermarriage; but some descendants do maintain some cultural traditions.–A study done in 2006 showed that almost 60% of batavian adults are fluent speakers both English and French.–Today batavian culture is slowly being regained by some members.; though it remains marginalized socially.–
