Batavia, New York is a small town located in the Chenango County of upstate New York. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Batavia were Dutch traders who stopped there during their voyage to India in 1624. They built a trading post on the east side of the Chenango River, which they called "Het Looi" (the Pool). In 1627, General Hendrick Corstiaensen and his army invaded Canada and captured Fort Orange on the Mohawk River, which became known as Corstiaensen's Fortress. The Dutch colonists built a new trading post at present-day Batavia on Hudson Bay in 1629 and named it "Nieuw Amsterdam". In 1635, Batavia was sacked by its Indian allies for refusing to supply them with goods necessary for war against Spain. The English took over from the Dutch in 1636 and renamed it "New Netherland". In 1784, after Virginia had gained independence from Great Britain, the British annexed what is now Chenango County into New York; however, much of Batavia remained under Dutch control until 1795 when it reverted back to Holland under an agreement made between William Tryon and Nicholas de Heinsius. After missing out on American Revolution because he sided with England instead of George Washington's cause, Nicholas de Heinsius lost all his possessions within New York when America acquired her independence in 1776. However some aspects such as trade relations continued until 1802 due to Netherlands' lack of military power following Independence War victory over France at Saratoga campaign. The town has been founded by several different groups including: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnizians who arrived here around 1700; fur traders Vitus Brouwer and Jacob Weyhe arriving about 1800; Symon De Witts arrival about 1809; Anthony Dyson about 1830; Tobias Bushnell about 1840; James Purdy arrival about 1850 There was also a group led by Revd Isaac Watts who arrived here in 1808 soon after coming across America via shipwreck while exploring what would become Rhode Island

The town was first settled in 1786 by Jacob Lewin and his family. Lewin had come to America from Germany in 1762 as a landowner and trader with the Dutch East India Company. In 1786, he sold his land to George Washington for $3,000. Batavia developed rapidly due to its location on the Susquehanna River between Westchester County on the north and Chemung County on the south. By 1800, it had a courthouse and a schoolhouse. In 1801-1802, General James Wilkinson built Fort Niagara here for the American War of 1812 against Great Britain. By 1814-1815, Batavia had an industry including two sawmills and fourteen tanneries; three churches; four stores; twelve houses; one mill; two blacksmiths; and one carpenter shop. In 1821-1822, Batavia became part of what would become Steuben County when it was created from parts of Westchester and Chemung Counties. At that time there were only six communities in New York state: Albany (the capital), Buffalo (the largest city), Yonkers (northernmost village), Schenectady (southwesternmost village), Auburn (centralNY's largest city), Utica (a small community near Geneva) and Batavia itself—all within five miles of each other on Mohawk River valley Road which ran parallel to major wagon trails used by farmers moving their goods westward across New York State during the early 19th century
