In 1835, following a prophecy by an old woman known as The Prophetess, many people began to fear that a great fire would soon consume their town if they did not convert to Christianity. After much effort and prayer by residents and pastors alike, most residents converted to Christianity in 1840. That year also saw the founding of Batavia Academy which remains one of its primary functions today. On July 1st 1938Batavia officially became a city when it passed an act becoming one hundredth anniversary commemoration for its incorporation into New York State on January 26th 1830 from Västerås Parish/City (Larimer)District No 3/5 northward thereof pursuant to section 1053(a) (1) Of The Consolidated Laws Of NNY 1960 chp 202 et seq..- along with nearby villages such as Geneva and Clinton

The name "Batavia" is derived from the East Indian word "batavia", meaning "fortress". It was originally a fortified trading post between Java and Southeast Asia. In 1629, the fort became an English colony under James I of England. The English built a new Fort William at present-day Jakarta in 1638 to defend against Portuguese attacks. In 1795, Batavia was sacked by French troops during their attempt to take over Indonesia. In 1827, it became part of the United Kingdom when British traders took over from Dutch colonists. After independence from Britain, it reverted back to Dutch hands until 1949 when it became an Indonesian province.
